Albuquerque, N.M.-based Eclipse Aviation today received European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) type certification for the Eclipse 500 very light jet. The approval is for private flights only, the EASA clarified, and Eclipse expects to receive the EU-OPS 1 certification for commercial operations next year. According to the EASA, the certificate is valid for VFR and IFR operations, including RVSM and flight into known icing.
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has announced that, as of September 25, RVSM is now in effect in the airspace above the Africa-Indian Ocean (AFI) Region.

Business aircraft maintenance, modification and completions firm Stevens Aviation today delivered the first Lear4Ever–an upgraded Learjet 35–to Dr. Steve Bass in a ceremony at its Greenville, S.C. headquarters. For $2 million and six months of downtime, the Lear4Ever program provides “a series of upgrades, retrofits and modifications” intended to modernize and extend the useful life of 20- and 30-series Learjets.
Honeywell and West Star Aviation have received supplemental type certification of an RVSM equipment package for the Learjet 35 and 36. The installations, performed at West Star, Grand Junction, Colo., consist of Honeywell’s AZ-252 advanced air-data computer, AM-250 and BA-250 barometric altimeters and an AL-800 altitude alerter control. Installed price and downtime are $165,000 and about three weeks, respectively.
Charter operators and flight departments that are still searching for ways to cope with the FAA’s proposal to implement domestic reduced vertical separation minimums (DRVSM) rules gained some welcome assistance last month from Capitol Hill.
Phoenix Rising Aviation, an 18-month-old maintenance firm at Drake Field in Fayetteville, Ark., expects this month to receive its first RVSM STC for a Falcon 20, with group approval planned by year-end. The RVSM program is being developed primarily for Falcon 20s equipped with the original Collins AP-105 or Sperry SPC-500 autopilots. Cost is “under $200,000,” including height-monitoring tests. Avionics Mobile Services in England has received UK CAA certification of its RVSM package for the BAC 111-475 and -500 series. The package, developed in partnership with Aeromech in Everett, Wash., includes an air-data display unit from IS&S of Malvern, Pa., and costs about $195,000 installed. Downtime is about three weeks.
