A St. Louis-area maintenance facility is finalizing flight-test data required to support a Sabreliner 65 reduced vertical separation minimum (RVSM) compliance package. Avmats of Chesterfield, Mo., expects to receive group certification in October for Sabre 65s. The RVSM package includes replacement of the jet’s Collins ADC-80K air-data computer with new dual Collins ADC-87A air-data computers.
Reduced Vertical Separation Minima
The FAA’s Operational Evolution Plan (OEP) is moving to regain the momentum lost following September 11. Introduced last June, the OEP was aimed at transforming today’s air traffic system into a more efficient, expanded-capacity operating environment by the progressive introduction of advanced ATC and aircraft systems over the next 10 years.
With the anticipated publication this month of an NPRM in the Federal Register, the FAA is laying the groundwork for implementation of domestic reduced vertical separation minimums (DRVSM) in U.S. airspace between FL 290 and FL 410 in December 2004.
Six additional flight levels will be introduced later this month in northern Canada airspace when Nav Canada implements reduced vertical separation minimum airspace (RVSM) from 57 deg north latitude to the North Pole from FL 290 through FL 410 inclusive (see also page 82). A transition area to and from the 1,000-ft vertical separation routes of RVSM airspace will extend to 52 deg north latitude.
Learjet 30-series jets operating in the Pacific Rim can have RVSM mods performed by Jet Aviation Singapore. Under an agreement with the jet’s manufacturer, Bombardier, Jet Aviation will arrange for height-monitoring flights and install modifications to make the aircraft RVSM-compliant. The agreement applies to Learjet 31s, 31As, 35s, 35As, 36 and 36As. RVSM currently applies in Pacific airspace from FL 290 to FL 390 inclusive.

Duncan Aviation, the Lincoln, Neb. company that specializes in avionics STCs and installations, has prepared a free booklet titled Straight Talk About RVSM (reduced vertical separation minimums). The booklet describes how RVSM implementation affects corporate operators and includes an explanation of regulatory requirements, a list of scheduled implementation dates and answers to a series of frequently asked questions.
In a down economy it usually makes sense to focus on the finer details of running a business. Instead of pipe wrenches, avionics installers are using Allen keys to strengthen and fine tune their strategies, relying, for example, on new and pending FAA regulations for RVSM, TAWS and ELTs to help propel them through the slowdown.

Avmats of Chesterfield, Mo., has received RVSM STC group approval for Sabreliner 65s. The package, which includes installation of new Collins ADC-87A air-data computers, costs $139,000 installed and includes all hardware. Sabreliner received FAA group RVSM certification for the Sabreliner 65 in June last year and offers both Collins analog and digital RVSM packages for the Sabre 65 for $128,200 and $166,500, respectively, through this month.
