Republic Airways and Delta Air Lines in late July reached an agreement to remove the Indianapolis-based regional airline’s final eleven 37-seat Embraer ERJ 135s from service. Original schedules called for Republic to remove the airplanes at a rate of two per month between this coming November and April next year. The revised agreement resulted in the removal of three aircraft on July 31, followed by four on August 31.

Jet Republic today announced the launch of a major new European fractional ownership, lease and block charter program and revealed itself as the previously unidentified customer for up to 110 Bombardier Learjet 60XRs (25 of which are firm). Deliveries will begin in October next year and will run at a rate of about one aircraft per month.

British air-taxi operator startup FlairJet yesterday announced plans to enter service next May with a pair of Embraer Phenom 100s. It will lease the very light jets from an undisclosed Embraer customer in Europe that has 10 Phenom 100s on order. FlairJet has placed an order for one Phenom 100, as well as an option for another, and is due to receive this airplane in 2012. It has an option to lease further Phenom 100s beginning in 2010.

Midwest Airlines will replace all but nine of its Boeing 717s with 12 Embraer 170s flown by Indianapolis-based Republic Airways as part of an effort to restructure its fleet and fend off bankruptcy. As part of the deal, Midwest announced that Republic flight crew would fly the 12 E170s as Midwest Connect, temporarily replacing Midwest Airlines Boeing 717 crew until they receive training on the Brazilian equipment.

When Bombardier and Embraer ended mass production of their respective 50-seat jets by 2006, it appeared that the regional airline industry’s love affair with the little RJs had run its course. With most major airline scope clauses relaxed to allow 70-and even 76-seat jets in their regional partners’ fleets, demand for the less cost-effective 50-seaters had essentially evaporated.

Republic Airways CEO Bryan Bedford’s characterization of the Chautauqua Airlines pilots’ vote in favor of US Airways’ “Jets for Jobs” arrangement as “a day late and a dollar short” prompted Teamsters Local 747 representatives to mail strike ballots to the 700-strong pilot group. The union planned to count the ballots on June 20.
