Seventeen Gulfstreams with recently overhauled Rolls-Royce Spey or Tay engines were grounded last month when a problem was discovered with the engines’ air control actuator (ACA), a key fuel control component. All the engines were being, or had recently been, overhauled by either Rolls-Royce or BizJet International. According to Gulfstream, three of the aircraft were already in scheduled maintenance at the time.

Rolls-Royce and Chinese aerospace representatives have signed a “collaborative agreement” to study a new regional jet application for the Rolls-Royce BR710 engine. An MOU, signed by representatives of Rolls-Royce Deutschland and the China Aviation Industry Corporation (AVIC), involves the potential use of the 14,000 lb- to 17,000-lb-thrust BR710 on China’s proposed ARJ21 regional jet.

Despite the large-cabin Gulfstream’s aura of being the all-American business jet, it
has significant European content. On the G350/450 that content includes the pair of Rolls-Royce Tay engines, and on the G500/550 it includes not only the Rolls-Royce Deutschland BR710 turbofans but also the tail, which is made by Stork Fokker in Holland.
