This year marks the 50th anniversary of Rolls-Royce introducing its ground-breaking Power-by-the-Hour support package with a service developed for the Viper engines on the HS125 jet. That was back in 1962, and the engine manufacturer still has one aircraft supported on that program.
Rolls-Royce closed the Farnborough International airshow with a flurry of new business from Latin America. Brazil-based Synergy Aerospace signed a $630 million contract covering Trent 700 engines and TotalCare support for nine Airbus A330 aircraft ordered on July 12. Earlier, Colombia-based AviancaTaca placed a $280 million order with Rolls-Royce covering Trent 700 engines to power fourA330 freighters, as well as TotalCare support. The deal confirms a memorandum of understanding placed in November 2011. The four A330s will be operated by AviancaTaca subsidiary Tampa Cargo.
An all-new RB3025 engine concept has been created by Rolls-Royce following a Boeing request also extended to General Electric and Pratt & Whitney for a powerplant for a future 777-size aircraft in around 2020. The current 777 is powered exclusively by the GE90.
Rolls-Royce has selected a 132.5-inch diameter for the composite fan for the 99,500-pound-thrust engine, which will sport a 12:1 bypass ratio and a 62:1 overall pressure ratio that would be the highest achieved on a commercial aircraft.
A composite fan blade, a real Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 high-bypass powerplant and a model of the Trent XWB being developed for the Airbus A350 are on the manufacturer’s stand here at Farnborough (Hall 4 Stand H3, and Innovation Zone) to illustrate the state of the engine maker’s art and where the company expects to go next.
Rolls-Royce unveiled a new, more efficient 787 engine variant yesterday at its main Farnborough press briefing. The Trent 1000-TEN (Thrust Efficiency New technology) leverages new technologies from the in-development XWB engine for the Airbus A350XWB. The more efficient Trent 1000-TEN will be rated for up to 78,000 pounds of thrust, enabling it to be used as a common powerplant for all Boeing 787 variants, namely the -8, -9 and, if it launched by the U.S. aircraft manufacturer, the -10X.
By the beginning of June, the first 84,000-pound-thrust Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engine had flown for more than 40 hours aboard the Airbus A380 flying testbed (FTB) as Airbus moves toward a first A350 flight “probably around mid-2013,” according to engine program director Chris Young. Trent XWB Serial Number 20990 had logged 43 hours and was scheduled to make two more flights before replacement by S/N21000, dubbed FTB2 (see box).
Ten Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines–serial numbers (S/Ns) 20990, 20001 through 20006, 20009 and 21000–are being used in the test program.
•By last month, some 43 hours’ testing had been accumulated during 14 of 16 scheduled flights with initial flight-test unit S/N 20990, which will subsequently be available to provide spare capacity. Rolls-Royce says the powerplant is its most highly instrumented flight-test engine ever.
Rolls-Royce will not be rushing to spend the proceeds from selling its 32.5-percent equity and program shares in International Aero Engines (IAE) to Pratt & Whitney (P&W), according to civil aerospace president Mark King. The $1.5 billion cash sum will be retained for general corporate purposes, said the company, which is making a “modest” financial investment in P&W’s PW1100G-JM geared turbofan (GTF) powerplant offered for the re-engined Airbus A320neo program.
Rolls-Royce was close to reaching an agreement with Boeing on the requirements for a Trent 1000-powered 787-10X just ahead of the Farnborough International Airshow. The planned new version of the Dreamliner widebody could become a formal program later this year, possibly linked to the prospective launch of an upgraded 777.
Evergreen Aviation Technologies has awarded GA Telesis a supply chain agreement for the support of its CF6-80C2 engine components. Under the agreement GA Telesis will be a preferred supplier for Evergreen’s maintenance operations. The company supports Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Douglas and Embraer platforms plus CFM International, General Electric, Honeywell, International Aero Engine, Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce engines and replacement components.
