Emirates Airlines has offered a unique proposal to the British CAA that might allow the carrier to land its A380s at London Heathrow Airport in the middle of the night, when traffic levels are minimal. The plan would require the giant aircraft to use much steeper approaches than normal and land farther down the runway, past the traditional touchdown zone.
Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL) plans to close the current 5,200-foot south east-west runway (9R/27L) at 10 p.m. EDT on April 17, in preparation for construction of a new south runway.
Preliminary Report: Twinjet Crashes on Approach in Germany
Cessna 750 Citation X, Egelsbach, Germany, March 1, 2012–While on approach to Egelsbach Airport at the conclusion of a flight from Linz, Austria, the U.S.-registered twinjet crashed and burned in a wooded area, killing the two crewmembers and the three passengers. German accident investigators recovered the Citation X’s cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorders for analysis.
Preliminary Report: German Turboprop Misses Runway in Snow
France’s Lyon Bron business airport started grooving its runway on Tuesday to comply with FAA standards–a first in the country. This should allow more business jets to use the airport, since the runway carried several operating restrictions during rainy conditions. French aviation regulations do not impose any runway grooving mandates, but insurers do, an industry source told AIN.
The venue for the G8 Summit scheduled for mid-May has been moved from Chicago to Camp David near Frederick, Md. It will now be held at Camp David on May 18 and 19, which will affect aircraft flying into Hagerstown and Frederick Airports in Maryland, as well as Franklin County Airport in Chambersburg, Pa. The Martinsburg (W.Va.) Airport, which is the closest airport outside the restricted area, has an 8,800-foot ILS-equipped runway and a control tower.
Construction began at the end of January on a runway expansion project at Florida’s Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport with a price tag of nearly $800 million. The work will shift and lengthen Runway 9R/27L from its current 5,276 feet to 8,000 feet, giving the rapidly growing airport two parallel runways that can accommodate airline flights. The expansion is expected to increase the airport’s capacity from 84 flights per hour to more than 100.
The City of Pompano Beach is extending the main runway at Pompano Beach Airpark by 500 feet. Upon completion early this year, Runway 15-33 at the Fort Lauderdale area airport will be 4,918 feet long, allowing for easier takeoffs and landings and affording an increased level of safety.
The present expansion is somewhat ironic. The city–in an attempt to emphasize the former military training base’s GA-only usage–shortened 15-33 from its original length of 5,000 feet to its current length of 4,420 feet in 1971.
The Naples Airport Authority reopened Runway 5/23 late last week after paving the safety areas at both ends of the airport’s primary runway. The runway was closed since July 25, but the project was completed a few days ahead of schedule and under budget, the authority said. The safety areas provide more room for aborted takeoffs and other emergencies and extends the runway’s declared takeoff distance from 5,000 to 5,800 feet.
Like the key air transport sectors that it serves, Honeywell’s worldview is increasingly shifting eastward as markets in the Middle East and Asia continue to show strong growth. And the emphasis of the U.S. group’s technological development work remains focused on trying to ensure that traffic growth can be achieved without compromising safety.
The three runways at Quad City International Airport in Moline, Ill., have reopened after being closed for six months due to renovations to the main 10,000-foot runway and the “bulls-eye” area where the three runways intersect. A temporary runway, 10/28, that allowed aircraft to use the airport during renovations will now be converted into Taxiway Papa.
