U.S.-based aviation services provider Tempus Jets has partnered with the government of Rwanda to establish a stronger private aviation presence in the region. The Newport News, Va. company announced plans to establish FBO services at Kigali International Airport as well as position a number of turbine-powered aircraft there for on-demand charter use.

Middle East-based flight operations group Nexus is moving into Africa with plans to establish a flight operations center (FOC) in the Rwandan capital Kigali. Nexus has just signed a memorandum of understanding for the project with the Rwanda Development Board.

On April 6, 1994, the Rwandan government’s Falcon 50 was shot down over Africa, killing all aboard, including the presidents of Rwanda and Burundi. The incident sparked a year of genocide in Rwanda. It was never reported if the aircraft’s cockpit voice recorder was ever recovered–not until last month, that is.
