It is a common perception among operators and maintenance facilities that trying to get approval criteria from the FAA for just about anything is a moving target that varies from region to region and even among inspectors. “Shopping around” to get the answer you want to hear has been common for as long as anyone can remember. Loosely defined criteria can present a serious safety hazard, and it’s widely recognized that they are a significant waste of time and money for both the applicant and the FAA.
The Flight Safety Foundation (FSF) signed a memorandum of understanding with Mitre on October 31 to collaborate on developing database solutions to emerging aviation safety issues at both the local and regional level around the world.
Boeing and the Flight Safety Foundation have named Lee Wan-Lee of Taiwan’s Civil Aviation Authority the recipient of their lifetime achievement safety award for his work in flight standards, aircraft certification, regulatory upgrading, international safety cooperation and the dissemination of flight safety information. The award was announced at the FSF’s 66th annual International Aviation Safety Summit on October 30 in Washington.
The FAA talks a lot about the importance of safety management systems. It has several web pages dedicated to SMS. Newsletters dedicated to SMS. And employees certainly talk it up at internal and external meetings. But talk is cheap, as we all know.

Baldwin Aviation (Booth No. 1117) is revising its SAVVY safety management system (SMS) software to integrate it with new technology that allows clients to create custom documentation tailored to their unique environments and operations.
Baldwin’s new system can take electronic client inputs and customize every data point, even those that are unique to a specific client. The revised system also can include more parameters, including service issue tracking and cloud integration. Baldwin spend two years revising SAVVY and began integrated the new changes in January.

The independent Flight Safety Foundation (FSF) of Alexandria, Va., now has a member on the NBAA Safety Committee and NBAA plans to appoint a member to the FSF’s Business Advisory Committee, which addresses the concerns and challenges of corporate and business aviation. Peter Stein, chairman of the Business Advisory Committee, is the foundation’s representative on the Safety Committee. NBAA official has not yet announced who will be its representative on the FSF committee.
