Satellite voice, fax, datalink and Internet communications solutions provider Satcom Direct opened a new domestic office at the Sheltair FBO at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. The company’s new Savannah office includes a business office and a satellite testing and integration lab. Customers who visit the location will have access to Satcom Direct’s avionics and testing lab, training facility and support services for pilots, flight operations and maintenance staff.

JetBlue’s LiveTV has selected Greenwich AeroGroup to distribute its OpenPort-Aero broadband satcom system, which runs on the Iridium network. Greenwich AeroGroup and its Atlantic Aero, Western Aircraft and Summit Aviation facilities will sell, install and support the systems, as will other Greenwich-approved service providers. The first installation should begin in the third quarter, leading to STCs for a variety of aircraft, including helicopters, turboprops and jets.

Satcom Direct (Stand 867) is expanding its reach by opening an international facility in the United Kingdom. Its offices will be located inside Hangar 2 at TAG Farnborough Airport in the UK and will include an advanced avionics testing lab, training facility and support services for pilots, flight operations and maintenance staff that use the company’s suite of satellite voice, fax, data link and Internet communications services.

Inmarsat Global Xpress

Honeywell and Inmarsat have completed an exclusive agreement for Honeywell to develop onboard hardware to connect to Inmarsat’s Global Xpress high-speed satcom system. The Global Express agreement, said Carl Esposito, Honeywell Aerospace vice president of marketing and product management, “validates the strategy of [last year’s EMS Technologies] acquisition and the focus of global connectivity.”

Danish satellite communication service specialist Satcom 1 has launched Flight Billing to simplify and expedite billing for onboard satcom usage. Flight Billing is currently available for SwiftBroadband services. Next year, Satcom 1 will add an individual billing solution, called Pay Per User, for operators who bill usage to individual users through separate accounts set up in advance or while in flight.

The Iridium satcom system received FAA approval for use as an Aeronautical Mobile Satellite (Route) Service so operators can use Iridium systems for over-ocean critical ATC communications. Iridium’s advantages over other communications systems include much lighter weight, lower power needs and coverage over the Earth’s poles. The FAA approval means that Iridium satcom can be used for Future Air Navigation System (Fans) 1/A communications.

Honeywell announced yesterday that it offered to acquire EMS Technologies for $491 million, pending shareholder and regulatory approvals. The acquisition should be completed in the third quarter of this year.
