Savannah Air Center will change its name to Midcoast Aviation effective January 1. The Savannah, Ga.-based company was acquired by Jet Aviation in 2008, two years after Jet Aviation acquired Midcoast Aviation in St. Louis, as part of the company’s effort to strengthen its completions, modification and maintenance services in North America.

SheltAir Aviation Services opened its 12th FBO, at Georgia’s Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport, in late March, offering new competition for the formerly sole Signature Flight Support FBO in Savannah. SheltAir’s new FBO is located in a temporary facility in a 1,400-sq-ft office space attached to a 13,000-sq-ft hangar north of the Gulfstream maintenance facility.

Construction began last year on SheltAir’s new 7,000-sq-ft FBO terminal, which should be completed early in the second quarter.
The second phase of a new Savannah Service Center for Gulfstream Aerospace is under way and slated to enter service by next year’s third quarter. According to Gulfstream, it will be the largest maintenance facility in the world built specifically for business jets.
During the current economic climate, when many completion and refurbishment centers are struggling–some merely to survive–Savannah Air Center appears to be doing quite well. In fact, the Savannah, Ga. center is doing well enough to embark on construction of a new 12,500-sq-ft cabinetry shop and begin planning for an additional 70,000-sq-ft hangar.
Some feel that the rise in publicly owned aviation companies managed by MBAs has resulted in a decline in personal service.
The first of two phases of the Gulfstream Aerospace new Savannah Service Center has officially opened.
In March last year the company announced a seven-year, $400 million long-range expansion plan for its Savannah headquarters and business-jet manufacturing and maintenance facilities. It includes the new 624,588-sq-ft service center on 76.6 acres at the southwest quadrant of the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.
The planned Liberty Air Ventures FBO at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) has encountered some site delays, according to president and CEO Mary Pilgrim. “We hope to break ground next month,” she told AIN. Liberty Air is planning to build a new FBO with a 3,200-sq-ft terminal, 13,000-sq-ft maintenance hangar and 20,000-gallon jet-A fuel farm.
Gulfstream Aerospace announced its G200 MSG-3 scheduled maintenance program has received approvals from the FAA and the Civil Aviation Administration of Israel.
