Bringing to reality a deal announced at Heli-Expo last year, Shanghai Sikorsky Aircraft Co. (SSAC) has received business license approval from Chinese authorities, authorizing the light-helicopter manufacturing company to commence operations. The result will be a new line of light helicopters built in China, all of them license-built editions of existing Schweizer designs.

En route from Wycombe Air Park, northwest of London, to Shoreham on the south coast of England, a Hughes 269C broke into two sections, with the cockpit appearing to separate from the combined engine and tailboom assembly, according to witnesses. The bodies of two of the occupants were found in the wreckage and a third was found about 50 yards away.

Schweizer Aircraft and Jeppesen have updated the training manuals and materials for the Schweizer 300C and 300CBi. Jeppesen first developed manuals for the type in 1980 when it collaborated on the private/commercial helicopter manual with Hughes, the original owner of the Model 300’s type certificate. A decade ago Schweizer and Jeppesen decided jointly to update the original Hughes curriculum.

Sikorsky subsidiary Schweizer is developing a derivative of the existing Schweizer 333 light single. The 434 will offer improved payload and performance, a Schweizer marketing executive told AIN. The launch customer is Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of the Interior, which has ordered nine.

Just a few months after its official introduction at last winter’s HAI Heli-Expo, the Schweizer 300CBi, an enhanced version of Schweizer’s Model 300CB, is on its way to launch customer CSE Aviation, one of the UK’s largest and best known flight schools, located in Oxford, England.

Shanghai Sikorsky has delivered two Shen 3A helicopters (license-built Schweizer 300Cs) to Tianjin’s Civil Aviation University of China (CAUC). Acceptance flights were carried out at the Shanghai Gaodong Maritime Search and Rescue Heliport, located in the Pudong New District. This heliport serves as the base of operations for the port’s Maritime Search and Rescue Flying Service and is operated by China’s Ministry of Communications.

Bristow Group president and CEO Bill Chiles announced that his company will buy helicopter flight training outfit Helicopter Adventures for $15 million plus debt (approximately $5 million) on April 1. After completing the purchase, Helicopter Adventures will be renamed Bristow Academy.

According to Schweizer Aircraft president Paul Schweizer, business has never been better. Incorporated into the United Technologies (UTC) conglomerate as a subsidiary of Sikorsky Aircraft in 2004, Schweizer is now enjoying unprecedented sales and revenue growth, resulting in increased production of its piston and turbine helicopter models.

Paul Schweizer seems to have taken well to his unfamiliar role as an employee. Some five months after Sikorsky bought his company, Schweizer joked about having to answer to a boss for the first time in 22 years, but he seemed liberated by the prospect of tackling a backlog that had grown too big for his little company to handle.
