When it introduced its first miniature autopilot for unmanned air vehicle use in 1994, MicroPilot (Hall 4 Stand C18d) was hardly prepared for the subsequent explosion in demand for ever-smaller UAV platforms. Today, the Manitoba, Canada-based company has more than 750 customers in 65 countries and manufactures the world’s smallest auto-pilots and associated software, as well as accessories and customized UAV training and integration services.

Absent from Lockheed Martin’s IS&GS Dragon line-up is the most famous LM product to carry that name. True, the U-2 Dragon Lady is the responsibility of a different LM division–Aeronautics–but with the evergreen spyplane about to enjoy a new lease on life, it seems strange that LM has done little to promote what is arguably the most capable multi-intelligence aircraft ever built.

European missile house MBDA unveiled the results of its latest Concept Visions initiative yesterday: the CVS301 Vigilus. This concept seeks to define a system that could provide manned and unmanned aircraft with on-demand effects from around 2035.

Aurora Flight Sciences is displaying its Diamond DA42 optionally piloted aircraft (OPA) on the Diamond Aircraft stand here (OE18). The low-cost intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) solution is compatible with NATO standards, and “combines the best of manned and unmanned surveillance aircraft capabilities,” said U.S.-based Aurora.

Called the Centaur, the OPA can be self-deployed, as its ground control equipment fits in the aircraft’s cargo compartment. Conversion from manned to unmanned-configuration takes two crewmembers less than four hours.

The Miami-Dade, Fla., Police Department has developed standard operating procedures for the Honeywell T-Hawk micro air vehicle, which is flown by an operator using a computer.

Compelled by a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit, the FAA released information in April identifying the public and private entities authorized to operate UAVs in U.S. domestic airspace.

A Bloomberg Government report released June 17, said the U.S. Air Force has experienced 129 drone accidents in the past 15 years, with aircraft produced by Northrup Grumman Corp. and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems involved in more of the accidents than those of any other manufacturers.

A demonstrator for the U.S. Navy Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (Bams) UAV crashed near NAS Patuxent River on June 11. The UAV crashed into swampland about 20 miles east of the base and was destroyed, after what the Navy described as a routine flight. The accident came just four days before Northrop Grumman unveiled the first MQ-4C, the full-specification Bams UAV, at Palmdale, Calif.
