Merlin Simulation (Booth No. 3606) is here touting its approval of the only Robinson R22 VFR/IFR flight-training device built in accordance with FAA national simulator program (NSP) criteria. The FAA awarded level-3 certification to the non-motion simulator in August 2006.

The U.S. Army Flight School at Fort Rucker, Ala., accepted two OH-58D operational flight trainers (OFT) early this month from L-3 Communications’ Link Simulation division in Arlington, Texas, which is exhibiting its line of flight-training devices at Heli-Expo Booth No. 2647.

CAE-Macmet announced contracts last Wednesday for four simulator systems for the Indian armed forces. Macmet Technologies, India’s leading simulator company, was purchased last year by Canada’s CAE.

The FlightSafety International Gulfstream G150 simulator has received European level-D simulator qualification, the first such approval for a G150 simulator, according to the companies.
In addition, the European Aviation Safety Agency has approved FlightSafety’s G150 maintenance training program, located at the Dallas/Fort Worth Learning Center. A second device is slated to enter service in next year’s first quarter.

Fidelity Flight Simulation, a Pittsburgh maker of full-motion flight-training devices (FTDs) for fixed-wing aircraft, this month plans to deliver the company’s first-ever helicopter simulator. Based on the medium-twin Eurocopter EC 135, the device is scheduled for late-May delivery to its new owner, EMS operator Stat Medevac.

There is too little business-aircraft training capacity in Europe, according to a European Business Aviation Association (EBAA) survey. “More training, simulators and training availability on [more] aircraft types are required,” based on input from 48 operators employing 774 pilots holding 803 type ratings and flying 244 aircraft.

Emirates-CAE Flight Training has signed a three-year contract to provide helicopter training for Indian-based offshore helicopter operator Global Vectra Helicorp. Global Vectra flight crews will undergo training on a Bell 412 full-flight simulator at ECFT’s facility in Dubai. The agreement covers recurrent and initial type training.

Embraer and Montreal-based training provider CAE announced a joint venture to provide pilot and maintenance training for the Brazilian airframer’s new Phenom 100 very light and Phenom 300 light jets. According to the agreement, CAE will begin initial training for pilots and technicians at its Dallas facility in the third quarter of next year, and at its Burgess Hill, UK center starting in early 2009.

Rockwell Collins, known primarily for its avionics products, will enter the simulator market by acquiring NLX Holding from Arlington Capital Partners, a Washington, D.C. private-equity firm. NLX, based in Sterling, Va., builds civil and military simulators and has provided business aircraft simulators to SimuFlite and Pan Am International Flight Academy.

Honda Aircraft signed an agreement with FlightSafety International at NBAA’07 for factory-authorized pilot and mechanic training for the HondaJet. Training initially will be offered at Honda Aircraft’s Greensboro, N.C. headquarters but might later be expanded to FlightSafety learning centers, according to Honda Aircraft CEO Michimasa Fujino.
