British Airways has delayed delivery of its first six Airbus A380s by an average of five months and the remaining six by an average of two years, the airline confirmed in a July 3 traffic release. Although it still expects first delivery of the big jets in 2012, under the terms of the new schedule the last airplane would not arrive until 2016.
Indianapolis is now home to the third Rolls-Royce global On-Wing Care center to open in the past 18 months. The engine maker’s latest facility in a global network of repair and overhaul service centers, it will serve as Rolls-Royce’s new North American headquarters for the On-Wing Care program. The $1 million On-Wing Care center located at Indianapolis International Airport becomes the sixth Rolls-Royce facility in the Indianapolis area.

The $1 million, 14,000-sq-ft hangar and 11,000-sq-ft-shop provide line maintenance and “hospital level” support for all Rolls-Royce corporate and regional aircraft engines. A company spokesman said the facility can handle more than 100 engines a year.

After little more than 18 months’ service, the Airbus A380 very large airliner is delivering on the manufacturer’s commitments, including lowest fuel burn and operating cost and increased revenues and operators’ market share. “The A3XX [as the program was originally identified] promised a lot and the A380 delivers,” said product marketing director Richard Carcaillet.
European jetliner manufacturer Airbus has acknowledged operators’ “teething troubles,” but it characterizes the A380’s entry into service as “very successful.” The comments follow technical incidents involving 13 aircraft flying with Emirates Airline, Qantas and Singapore Airlines, as well as reported dissatisfaction at Emirates, the A380’s largest customer.
It took all the resources it could reasonably muster, but Airbus managed to reach its target of delivering 12 A380 aircraft last year when on December 30 it handed over to Emirates Airline that carrier’s fourth superjumbo.

Singapore Airlines last Thursday took delivery of its sixth Airbus A380. The airplane arrived in Singapore at 8:23 a.m. local time, following a ferry flight that took off from the Airbus Delivery Center in Toulouse, France, a day earlier.
