At the Singapore Airshow today, new business jet operator BJets launched its block charter, fractional and aircraft management service with a massive $600 million order for 20 Cessna Citation CJ2+s and 20 Hawker 850XPs and 900XPs, to be delivered over the next five years. Another 10 Hawkers are on option. The value of the CJ2+ order is $150 million, while its firm order for 11 Hawker 900XPs and nine 850XPs is valued at $450 million.
The air transport industry’s center of gravity is shifting to Asia and Singapore’s aerospace industry is poised to reap the benefit, the country’s prime minister said here yesterday before officially opening the show.
Opening-day visitors to the inaugural Singapore Airshow will find a brand-new site fit for the newly revamped event. The Republic of Singapore Air Force has begun a three-year research program with three EADS departments to develop advanced capabilities in the field of maintenance for the RSAF’s fleet of AS332 Super Pumas. The RSAF is working with Eurocopter, EADS Singapore Research and Technology Centre, and Eurocopter Southeast Asia.
Two years ago EADS decided to tap Singapore’s strengths in science and technology by shifting part of its research and development effort here. Today, its investment in the Singapore Research and Technology Center (SRTC) appears to be reaping dividends, and the facility is now conducting work in four scientific areas, having reached a staff of 15 and an annual budget of approximately $1.7 million.
Singapore concluded bilateral “Open Skies” agreements (OSAs) with Denmark, Sweden and Norway late last month. The new deals will allow Singaporean air carriers to fly between Singapore and any destination in Scandinavia, via and beyond to any third country without any restrictions in terms of passenger capacity, service frequency or aircraft type. In return, Scandinavian airlines now enjoy the same rights into and through Singapore.
The relaunched Singapore Airshow will stage its first event at a brand-new venue from February 19 to 24.
In just over three months, on February 19, the renamed Singapore Airshow will open at a brand new purpose-built site, with a new dress code for professional visitors and a new organization behind the scenes.
