Vision Systems Aeronautics (Booth 2809) of Lyon, France is unveiling here at EBACE 2014 two new products: Energia, a self-powered dimmable window; and VisiStream, a solution for Wi-Fi inflight entertainment (IFE) and connectivity.
Dassault Aviation’s introduction of the Falcon 5X, the French OEM’s biggest business jet to date, was a major event at the NBAA Convention in October, but it was the unveiling of a cabin skylight as standard that caught the eye of those entering the mockup on display at the company exhibit.

The U.S. company has licensed Vision Systems (Stand 2639) to produce the windows, and the technology is a highlight of this year’s Dubai Air Show.

PPG Aerospace is developing transparencies for aircraft cockpit and cabin windows that help keep the interior cooler by reducing heat from the sun. The clear solar-reflective window coatings cut solar transmittance in half, said PPG Aerospace global director Anthony Stone. Aircraft like the Boeing 787 and Hawker 4000 that are built using composites don’t dissipate solar heat as well as aluminum airplanes, Stone noted.

Buyers of an executive version of the new Airbus A350XWB will have the option of selecting the electrochromic (or “smart windows”) technology from PPG. The windows, developed by Gentex of Zeeland, Mich., contain an organic di-electric gel. When a very low electrical current is introduced, the gel will darken, rendering the window opaque.
The solution to sun glare, long a problem in the cabin, has in the past meant pulling the shades to block out the light. Now, Research Frontiers, of Woodbury Park, N.Y., is offering improved suspended particle device (SPD) light-control technology as a new solution that allows the passenger visual access to what’s outside without the glare.
