Kaman and Lockheed Martin continue to expand the missions being flown by the unmanned K-Max helicopter at the Army’s Yuma, Ariz., Proving Ground. The helicopter recently made multiple guided airdrops at 10,000 feet msl. The 16 payloads airdropped included medical equipment, food, simulated leaflets and bulk cargo and were programmed by the GPS-guided Joint Precision Delivery System (JPADS) or triggered from a remote ground control station.
Happy Design Studio is forging a reputation for innovative and exciting aircraft paint schemes, highlighted by its recent win in a competition to design a new livery for the single-prop TBM 850 six-seater. The contest was launched in July by the TBM 850's manufacturer, Daher-Socata, to create a new paint scheme to be introduced for 2011 production aircraft in celebration of the company's 100th anniversary.
The pilot made an emergency landing after the turboprop single suffered engine and instrument failure during a Part 91 flight from San Luis Obispo Airport to Fresno-Yosemite Airport. After the power-off touchdown at Lost Hills-Kern County Airport, the TBM overran the runway and shed its nosegear. The aircraft sustained substantial damage to its wings and fuselage. The owner-pilot and four passengers were uninjured.
Socata TBM700, Memphis, Tenn., Jan. 26, 2010–After approaching the destination airport near dusk in deteriorating weather, the pilot forgot to lower the landing gear before landing, causing substantial damage to the aircraft’s fuselage skin, stringers and wing attachment fittings.
Work on Gulfstream’s midsize jets played a major role in keeping 2009 income levels up for Switzerland’s Altenrhein Aviation. The Pilatus Aircraft-owned company also supports the PC-12 and Porter turboprop singles as well as the TBM 700/850 series, Citations and Caravans, the DHC-6 Twin Otter and the Beech 1900. Altenrhein’s 50,000-sq-ft facility can accommodate five Gulfstreams.
Socata TBM700, Truckee, Calif., Dec. 13, 2009–The turboprop single crashed into woods during a landing attempt at Truckee-Tahoe Airport in fog and light snow. According to the pilot, he determined there was not enough runway left after exiting a fog bank and attempted a go-around. He added power, but the aircraft could not climb above the trees past the departure end of Runway 28.
Socata TBM700, Kennesaw, Ga., July 15, 2008–The NTSB attributed the fatal crash of the single-engine turboprop to the pilot’s failure to maintain airspeed during final approach, which resulted in an aerodynamic stall. The aircraft was destroyed and its pilot killed when it rolled inverted and collided with trees short of the runway at Cobb County-McCollum Field.

Socata TBM 700, Clovis, N.M., Dec. 22, 2008–The Board ruled that the pilot’s failure to complete the before-landing checklist led to his failure to lower the gear. The gear-up landing substantially damaged the single-engine turboprop. The pilot was using the autopilot for a straight-in approach to the non-towered airport’s Runway 22.
Daher-Socata is still mulling a new eight- to 10-seat twin-engine aircraft to enter the market segment above its extremely popular TBM 850 turboprop single, but a decision could come by the end of the year.
