Socata TBM 700B, Mobile, Ala., April 24, 2003–At 8:12 p.m. CDT a Socata N705QD, registered to Fleet National Bank and operated by Quest Diagnostics, collided with a telephone pole, crashed and burned half a mile short of Runway 18 at the Mobile
Downtown Airport, Ala. The sole-occupant pilot was killed. N705QD was being operated under Part 91 on an IFR flight plan in VMC.
Recent industry scuttlebutt that Daher Aerospace will take a majority stake in EADS Socata is likely to be confirmed next month following “exclusive negotiations” between the two companies announced last month.
EADS Socata celebrated the 20th anniversary of the first flight of its TBM 700 with a new and larger display at the 56th EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., held July 28 to August 3. Two 2008 TBM 850s, equipped with Garmin G1000 integrated avionics and outfitted with a new-style cabin interior, are the centerpiece of Socata’s 10,000-sq-ft display. These aircraft will also carry the TBM 850’s new paint scheme.

EADS Socata TBM 850, Iowa City, Iowa, June 3, 2008–A two-year-old patient was killed when an Angel Flight TBM 850 crashed on takeoff from Iowa City. According to the Iowa City Press-Citizen, eyewitnesses said a wing turned perpendicular to the ground before the turboprop crashed and then cartwheeled. Weather was overcast, with rain and wind gusting to 36 mph.
There were more than a few moments during my three-and-a-half hours flying the Socata TBM 850 when it was easy to imagine the conversation I’d soon have with a couple of friends who own piston twins. The TBM is a suitable replacement for their aircraft–a Cessna 421 and a B55 Baron.
EADS Socata, the France-based manufacturer of the TBM 850 turboprop, last month denied the content of a June 1 story in the India Times, which reported that UB Group’s Vijay Mallya was ready to invest $200 million in the development of a jet. “We did talk to Mallya, but it was about relaunching our line of piston singles,” a spokesman said, adding that the company has made no progress recently in the search for partners in business aircraft.
