Epic Aircraft continues development of its all-composite turboprop singles and very light jets, though without the $200 million in funding pledged by Indian billionaire Dr. Vijay Mallya last September at the NBAA Con- vention. The deal with Mallya isn’t dead, Epic CEO Rick Schra-meck told AIN, but has become “more complicated due to other outside partners.”
EADS Socata at EBACE outlined what its product launch might be next year–a twin-engine business aircraft that is bigger than its TBM 850 turboprop single. “The future product will have two more seats than the [six-seat] TBM,” said Socata CEO Jean-Michel Léonard. Socata expects to make a launch decision early next year. “Before that, four criteria have to be met,” he said.
While few seemed quite sure what to expect from the postponed NBAA Convention, those who made the trip to New Orleans last month generally expressed satisfaction with the number of attendees and the atmosphere of the show overall. The rescheduled event was held December 12 to 14 inside the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center as the rest of the city was launching into its unique brand of holiday revelry.
Socata plans to equip all new TBM 700 turboprops and Trinidad piston singles with Honeywell Bendix/King flight information service (FIS) hardware, bringing real-time graphic and text weather information to the cockpits of equipped airplanes for any destination in the U.S. According to Dan Barks, director of general aviation marketing for Honeywell, FIS will be a significant factor in improving general aviation safety.

An incident in which the elevator controls on a Socata TBM 700 literally froze up and jammed because water accumulated in the fuselage and froze led to a French AD in October last year requiring compliance with a June 2000 Socata Service Bulletin calling for a new fuselage strainer draining system on the turboprop single.
