In a company-wide memo circulated to employees January 20, Bell Helicopter announced the launch of “Magellan,” a new helicopter widely believed to be a medium-twin replacement for its venerable 412 and aimed at the superheated deepwater offshore oil and gas market. The memo said Magellan is a follow-on to “Project X.” Magellan is thought to have civil and military applications. Bell declined to comment on the memo.

VMC prevailed at the time of the crash. The Mexican government is conducting the accident investigation.

A program put in place to improve the oversight of aviation safety for African countries has completed many of its work goals one year ahead of target. The African Comprehensive Implementation Program (ACIP) was launched in 2007, and its four-year first phase has seen most of its goals reached by this year, according to ICAO’s secretary general Raymond Benjamin.
