There were few spectacular announcements of radical new aircraft at this year’s EAA AirVenture Oshkosh show, held July 27 through August 3, but the popular event was well attended, the crowds enjoyed the first-ever appearance of a U.S. military jet aerobatic team–the Air Force Thunderbirds–and there were plenty of exciting attractions.

The annual Experimental Aviation Association (EAA) AirVenture show officially opens tomorrow in Oshkosh, Wis., but aviation enthusiasts have been streaming in to Oshkosh Wittman Regional Airport for the past few weeks.

Kitplane company Sonex Aircraft announced that its JSX-2 SubSonex Personal Jet flew on July 10. The initial goal of the flight-test program was to evaluate the single-engine jet’s systems, flight controls, gear and overall aircraft geometry, and handling through moderately high speeds. A second flight checked the function of the retractable landing gear and explored higher speeds.

This year’s EAA AirVenture started out cloudy, cool and gloomy, but the weather soon matched the crowd’s upbeat outlook and the entire week was marked by comfortable low humidity and moderate temperatures.

Oshkosh, Wis.-based Sonex Aircraft opened the order book on July 28 for the smallest, lightest and lowest-cost jet-powered airplane–the $125,000 SubSonex single-seater. The tiny jet will be sold as a nearly completed kit, and the price includes everything except paint and avionics.

Sonex Aircraft brought what might be the only new jet-powered aircraft to EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis.–a research-and-development project intended to evaluate market reception for a small jet airplane kit.
