A new noise-cancelling headset introduced in April at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Germany, is set to find a market in business and private aviation.

Middletown, R.I.-based Avid claims the headset “effectively reduces environmental external noise by 85 percent with a 20-decibel maximum noise attenuation.” Forty-millimeter speakers, said an Avid spokeswoman, “ensure crisp, clear sound and well defined bass.”

Aerion Corp. is preparing to start another round of test flights in the development of what would be the world’s first supersonic business jet (SBJ). A new test article is set to fly in the centerline position beneath one of NASA’s F-15B aircraft in either June or July.

Aerion said today that it plans to fly a “more representative” wing test article for its supersonic business jet this summer. Following supersonic tests in 2010 aboard a NASA F-15B, the company has refined the wing design and plans to use the same aircraft to conduct another round of tests in June or July. Fabrication of the 40-inch vertical span by 80-inch chord test article is now under way and will be complete by the end of next month, it said.

Smac Aero of Toulon, France, continues to develop new technology aimed at reducing aircraft cabin noise and promoted its full line of noise-reduction technology in Cannes, France.

Among the latest items is the SmacBarrier, an acoustic layer designed to reduce the transmission of sound generated around window trim panels, flooring and ceiling panels.

Also fresh off the development line is SmacFoam, specifically created to reduce sound transmission and provide sound absorption in smaller, confined spaces.

HyperMach said it is increasing the top speed of its planned supersonic business

HyperMach Aerospace’s planned 20-seat supersonic business jet (SSBJ), dubbed the SonicStar, will be able to fly at Mach 4.0, the company said Friday in Dubai. This is faster than the Mach 3.6 top speed announced when the proposed V-tailed aircraft was first revealed in June at the Paris Air Show. At Mach 4, the SonicStar would be able to fly from New York to Dubai in just 2 hours 20 minutes.

Thermal/acoustic specialist 3M introduced a new acoustic demonstrator from its subsidiary E-A-R Thermal Acoustic Systems (Booth No. N5930) here at the NBAA convention. The demonstrator was created to simulate not only interior noise levels of a typical business aircraft, but also the range of noise signatures with varying frequency content.

Sennheiser raised the stakes in the high-end, active-noise-reduction (ANR) headset game with the release of the S1 Digital at the EAA AirVenture show in Oshkosh, Wis. this week. Regular price for the S1 is $995 for the rest of this year, then $1,095. In August, Sennheiser will offer an optional XLR 3 power adapter and a 12-volt cigarette lighter adapter (including an extra female adapter) for the S1.

On the opening day at the Paris Air Show, HyperMach took the wraps off a 20-seat, Mach 3.6 business jet that would fly from Paris to New York in just under two hours. Key enabling technologies for the SonicStar include the SonicBlue S-MAGJET five-stage electric-turbine hybrid supersonic 4000-X series engine and a magnetic spike on the nose that can control sonic booms using plasma waves.
