“The pilot’s failure to obtain the proper touchdown point on the runway at Cuyahoga County Airport [CGF], Cleveland, Ohio, and the PIC’s failure to initiate a go-around,” were cited by the NTSB in its recently published final report as the probable cause of the Feb. 10, 2002, overrun accident of a Flight Options Mitsubishi MU-300 Diamond, N541CW.

Cessna Citation 550, Butler, Pa., Jan. 24, 2007–The NTSB has released more information about the Citation 550 that ran off the runway while landing at Butler County Airport in Pennsylvania. The copilot was flying the medical flight from the left seat. Aside from a problem with the autopilot’s altitude hold, which oscillated around the selected altitude, the ATP-rated pilot and copilot reported normal flight.

people? I’m not talking about the average aviation enthusiast. I’m talking about the editors and reporters of many of the nation’s news outlets. A number of aviation industry employees and organizations have worked hard to achieve an accident rate for Part 121 that is the lowest in history, but that is often unappreciated.
Landing overruns substantially damaged two Gulfstream IVs and a Falcon 20 in the period between November 29 and December 5. These accidents did not cause any injuries, but they were serious enough to warrant NTSB investigation and they happened around the same time that 23 people were killed in four separate accidents involving corporate jets and a King Air.
On May 15 last year a Citation CJ2 (Danish registration OY-JET) landed 1,000 feet down the 2,948-foot-long runway at Bader Field in Atlantic City, N.J., and crashed into the water. There were no serious injuries to the four occupants.
A Falcon 900 (N699BG) owned and operated by Erg Aviation II overran Runway 1 during landing at Greenville Downtown Airport, S.C., on July 17, but was stopped by the Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS), preventing possible injuries and damage. The pilot told the NTSB that during the approach the anti-skid system had to be tested twice to produce the correct indication.
The NTSB blamed the first officer’s poor techniques for the Dec. 18, 2003, crash of a FedEx Boeing MD-10-10F in Memphis, Tenn. The Safety Board attributed the crash to “the first officer’s failure to properly apply crosswind landing techniques to align the airplane with the runway centerline and to properly arrest the airplane’s descent rate before touchdown.
The FAA has decided to create a new rule to mandate a 15-percent runway landing safety margin for commercial operators instead of trying to impose the requirement via a policy letter and changes to operations specifications. The rule will likely affect Part 91 (Subpart K fractional operations), 135 and 121 operators.
While the NTSB is far from concluding its investigation into the fatal nighttime overrun accident involving a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 at Chicago Midway Airport (MDW) on December 8, the Safety Board has released preliminary findings that shed light on what was going on in the cockpit and with the weather before the crash.
The use of thrust reversers to shorten landing distance is a great benefit to aviation. But according to the Safety Board, relying too much on that benefit could lead pilots into landing with minimal safety margins.
