Bombardier delivered the first of 20 Q400 turboprops ordered by Calgary-based low-fare carrier WestJet on June 6. Plans called for WestJet’s new regional subsidiary, WestJet Encore, to start flying the airplanes on June 24 on new routes to Fort St. John and Nanaimo, British Columbia. The airline also plans to launch service to Brandon, Manitoba, on September 3, and open several new points in Alberta and Saskatchewan later in the year.

Nick Leontidis, a 25-year veteran at CAE, took over the reins as group president of civil simulation products, training and services on June 6 and got busy that same day, when CAE announced it had sold six full-flight simulators. Three go to Azal (Azerbaijan Airlines) and three more to Turkish Airlines. Azal bought simulators for the Embraer 190 E-Jet, and for the Sikorsky S-92 and AgustaWestland AW139 helicopters. The Turkish Airlines purchases were for the Boeing 737NG, Airbus A320 and A330.
CAE appointed Nick Leontidis today as group president for civil simulation products, training and services. He replaces Jeff Roberts, who left the company. Leontidis is a 25-year veteran at CAE, joining as a software engineer and rising to the executive ranks, most recently as executive vice president for strategy and business development. According to CAE, he has played a key role in the success of its civil business and global footprint expansion.
West Star Aviation has begun offering interior services at its Columbia, S.C.(CAE) location. The new interior shop offers a variety of partial interior work, including upholstery, panel recovery and carpet.
“We continue to build on an initial $15,000 investment to start improvements that support the interior business,” Scott Mullen, director of maintenance, told AIN. “It didn’t require any additional square footage to be added at this time as we were able to redirect existing floor space.”
Montreal-based simulation and training provider CAE (Booth 372) has announced here at EBACE new training programs, expanded offerings and contract extensions for and within the business aviation community.
CAE RealCase Troubleshooting for maintenance training, introduced at the show, uses the same principles behind the RealCase recurrent training developed for pilots, incorporating recent real-life event scenarios. The training is available for the Dassault Falcon 7X, 900EX EASy and 2000EX EASy models.
In parallel with global business jet sales, pilot training activity is, for the most part, stable and growing somewhat, particularly in new markets. At the same time, flight-training providers are reporting unprecedented growth in the civil helicopter sector, with much of this being driven by a surge in demand for rotorcraft support in the booming offshore oil and gas industries, plus the deployment of new-generation helicopter simulator technology.
Hong Kong-based Pacific-China Aero Technology (PCAT) has signed an exclusive training agreement with global training provider CAE, which is based in Canada. PCAT is a new customer for CAE (Booth P1012) and will send pilots for training in the Gulfstream G450, Beechcraft King Air 350, Cessna Citation XLS, XL, Sovereign and III platforms. Pilot training begins in May on the Sovereign at CAE’s facility near New York City.

UK-based CAE Oxford Aviation Academy placed an order for 35 Piper airplanes today at the Sun ’n Fun Fly-in in Lakeland, Fla. The agreement includes firm orders for 22 Archer TX piston singles and 13 piston twins, as well as parts and service.
CAE and the Southern California Aviation Association (SCAA) have announced an opportunity for some lucky pilot or maintenance technician residing in Southern California to win a pilot type rating or a maintenance training qualification for the Citation CJ.
