LEARJET 35A, GROTON, CONN., AUG. 4, 2003–The first officer’s inadvertent retraction of the flaps during low-altitude maneuvering caused Learjet N135PT to stall and crash into a house while attempting to land at the Groton/New London Airport, said the NTSB. Factors were the captain’s decision to perform a low-altitude maneuver using excessive bank angle, the flight crew’s inadequate coordination and low clouds surrounding the airport.
HAWKER SIDDELEY HS-125-700A, BEAUMONT, TEXAS, SEPT. 20, 2003–While the crew was practicing stalls, Hawker N45BP, operated by Starflite, of Houston, was destroyed when it went down 15 miles northwest of the Beaumont airport. All three pilots on board were all killed.
The Sino Swearingen SJ30-2 that crashed in a remote area of Texas on the morning of April 26 was on the second in a series of flights to complete flutter certification before it suddenly rolled and went into an uncontrolled descent into the ground. Company test pilot Carroll Beeler, 59, was killed in the accident. No one else was aboard.
Donald Greene, 52, executive vice president of bizav equipment supplier Safe Flight Instrument and a son of company founder Leonard Greene, was killed on United Airlines Flight 93, the Boeing 757 that was hijacked and crashed in Pennsylvania on September 11.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch of the UK’s Department of Transport implicated jet lag and over-the-counter drugs in the crash of Bombardier Challenger 604 N90AG, in Birmingham, England, on Jan. 4, 2002. The failure of the impaired crew, which had taken antihistamines the night before, to have the airplane de-iced before takeoff may have caused the jet’s stall, roll to the left and crash on takeoff, concluded the DoT.
This year’s Paris Air Show at Le Bourget provided an opportunity for me to see Dassault’s new Falcon 7X up close before I got my chance at the left seat, alongside Dassault 26-year veteran senior test pilot Yves (Bill) Kerherve, who has since retired from the company. A former French Navy fighter pilot, Kerherve flew the ultra-quiet 7X through a series of maneuvers for the crowd on the opening day of the show.
The FAA last month released Airworthiness Directive 2007-10-15, which requires that operators of all 765 U.S.-registered Cessna Caravans install low-airspeed awareness systems at a cost of about $8,200 per airplane. The AD also requires that Cessna-issued AFM Supplement S1–which addresses operations in icing conditions–be incorporated into the Caravan AFM.
