Bombardier has selected Revue Thommen’s AD20 two-inch electronic standby altimeter as a retrofit option for the Challenger 601-3A/3R and 604. According to the Swiss avionics specialist, the AD20 is the first electronic standby altimeter designed to RTCA DO-178B standards with software level A required for installation on Part 25-certified jets.
Following the 1998 crash of a Swissair MD-11 off Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada’s Transportation Safety Board (TSB) has issued an aviation safety advisory concerning the location, size and power sources of standby flight instruments. However, the TSB is emphasizing that no evidence suggests these caused the accident.
The UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch was unable to determine why Airbus A319 G-EUOB suffered a major electrical failure while flying at night from London to Budapest on Oct. 22, 2005. According to the AAIB final report, the airplane was en route from London Heathrow to Budapest and was approaching FL200 in clear conditions.
Pilots checking out the flight deck of the Eclipse 500 may notice something missing. The very light jet has no traditional standby instruments. That’s because they’re incorporated into the machine’s 15-inch multifunction display, which itself sits between the left and right PFDs. The standby data–airspeed, attitude, altitude and heading–appear on a compact four-inch square display, replicating the larger PFDs.
