Experts say African airlines such as Ethiopian Airlines (below), currently the most profitable among the four best-performing national carriers–the other three being Kenya Airways (above), Egyptair and South African Airlines–need to cooperate more on business strategy if they are stop losing market share to European, Middle Eastern and even U.S. carriers.

Africa’s airlines need to wake up to competition from outside the continent, form alliances that allow players both big and small to interact for the greater good, and realize that governments are often no longer interested in protecting domestic carriers (as they see economy-boosting tourist arrivals as a more important priority), according to Nick Fadugba, CEO of African Aviation Services.

Airbus predicts the Middle East will be the second largest regional market in terms of 20-year demand for very large aircraft, accounting for 26 percent. As of last month the Gulf carrier Emirates had received almost 40 Airbus A380s.

The Middle East is sitting at the end of the air transport rainbow, if Airbus forecasts are to be believed: its share of global traffic will expand faster than that of any other geographical area, increasing by one half in the next 20 years.

In one new, formerly closed market that Boeing has managed to penetrate, Iraqi Airways took delivery of its first 737-800 in August. The airline has committed to thirty 737NGs and ten 787s, although it does not plan to take its first Dreamliner until after 2020.

The Middle East has undoubtedly become key market for Boeing and Airbus alike, but the extent to which the two manufacturers enjoy market share in various capacity categories differs dramatically.

Airbus cited sleep-study results in calling on airlines to set an 18-inch minimum seat width standard for long-haul flights. Organizations representing the airline industry said seating options should be left to individual carriers.

Williams International (Booth No. C8118) is offering an expanded version of its Total Assurance Program (TAP) for engine maintenance called “TAP Blue.” Under the new program, Williams will cover “virtually every natural and unnatural event” that might befall its FJ33 and FJ44 engines including damage from lightning, hail or ingestion of birds or foreign object debris. Another new coverage item is all service bulletins, not just those that are mandatory.

Michael Johnson started Paramount Aviation Resources Group (Booth No. C12647) of Fredericksburg, Va., in 2007 as a crew procurement company after finishing his contract as chief pilot with Japan Airlines, where he also did contract administration, and realized there was a market for finding and screening flight crews for airlines. He had worked there since 2001 after being furloughed from American Airlines following the 9/11 attacks. He still holds his seniority number at American.

SkyTeam reports solid progress in Garuda Indonesia’s preparations to join the alliance in March next year, when it expects the Manila-based airline to become the only Indonesian carrier affiliated with a major international grouping. Garuda’s enrollment would make it the 20th SkyTeam member and the tenth from Asia.

The captain of a United Airlines flight died after being transported to a local hospital in Boise, Idaho, on September 27. The pilot suffered a heart attack while in command of a Boeing 737 en route to Seattle from Houston with 166 people aboard. The flight landed safely under the command of the aircraft’s first officer, with no other injuries reported.
