The flow of used aircraft to the market is slowing fairly dramatically, and some may wonder if that’s because all the aircraft for sale are already on the market. It might seem that way to some, but the more than 3,000 aircraft for sale right now–while not an insignificant number–represent only a fraction of the more than 16,500 jets currently in operation.

The summer doldrums in the pre-owned aircraft market have more often than not been followed by an upbeat seasonal period for aircraft sales, but that is not the case this year. The collective inventory continued its unabated, year-long climb, while prices have been experiencing a corresponding downward trek, accelerated by an historic unwinding of the financial markets.

The thought that the market for new and used corporate aircraft as well as corporate aviation itself may very well be the innocent beneficiary of terrorism would be a tough reality to accept. Is it possible that the corporate jet, long looked at by industry detractors as a perk, or symbol of luxury, may henceforth be viewed as a necessity?

3i, a UK-based investment holding company, is reported to be the front- runner in the race to buy Swiss-based Jet Aviation, according to a report in TheDeal.com. The online business publication wrote that Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, which also owns NetJets and FlightSafety International, had made a one-time, take-it-or-leave-it offer of $480 million for Jet Aviation.

Nasdaq’s listing qualification panel removed Great Lakes Aviation from its SmallCap Market index on August 14 after denying the airline’s appeal for an exemption. On August 1 Great Lakes submitted oral and written presentations to the Nasdaq panel, including a financial restructuring plan aimed at returning it to compliance with the market’s listing criteria.

The credit crisis on Wall Street scuttled start-up very light jet air-taxi Pogo Jet’s plans to start selling shares this week on the Nasdaq stock exchange.

Pogo Jet this week filed an amendment to its S-1 registration statement for an initial public offering of stock to finance the company’s entry into the very light jet air-taxi market. The filing indicates that Pogo expects to sell seven million shares of common stock at $12.50 to $16.50 per share, which would raise $87.5 to $115.5 million.

As anticipated in April, American Utilicraft of Lawrenceville, Ga., did indeed last month announce “a new aggressive strategy for deployment of the company’s first 25 FF-1080 Freight Feeder aircraft.” This strategy involves “creating alliances with potential acquisition candidates [to build an effective air-cargo company] and moving to a larger accounting firm capable of handling these types of transaction and associated regulatory issues.”
