Last November, Ruag Aerospace rolled out the new version of the Dornier Do-228 twin turboprop, the 228NG, and began the flight-test program for the resurrected airplane. Ruag’s board of directors decided to bring the 228 back into production in October 2007. The first 228NG took to the skies over Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany, on November 12.
Ruag Aerospace says it is on track to complete certification and first delivery of its Do228NG in March. The company holds orders and options for 10 of the New Generation version of the Dornier 228 twin turboprop from customers in Japan, Mexico, Australia, Vietnam and Argentina.
After Bobby Bishop’s Texas Turbine Conversions converted the single-engine de Havilland Canada DHC-3 Otter from a PT6 to a TPE331 engine, the company needed another project. The Cessna Caravan looked like a good prospect, so Bishop bought a 1995 Cessna Grand Caravan 208B that had been used for hauling newspapers and had logged 9,000 hours.
The FAA has awarded repair station status to Munich, Germany-based 328 Support Services for the Dornier 328 jet and turboprop in recognition of its executive conversion work, primarily in Europe so far. The company is working on its first executive 328 destined for a U.S. customer, Aviando Services of Miami.
Four Dornier 228s operated by the German Navy’s Marineflieger-geschwader 3 “Graf Zeppelin” on pollution-control and surveillance missions are being upgraded with new glass cockpits and composite propellers by Ruag Aerospace. The German Office of Defense Technology and Procurement signed the contract for the upgrade program in early August.
Bombardier and ATR each announced orders for a pair of turboprops last month, the Canadian manufacturer from Papua New Guinea’s Air Niugini for NextGen Q400s and the Franco-Italian airframe maker from Libyan Airlines for ATR 42-500s. The Q400 order included an option on a single airplane of the same type. Air Niugini’s fleet now consists of three 26-seat Q200s and three 50-seat Q300s.

Bombardier next month plans to start more than a year of testing with the first aluminum-lithium test barrel for the C Series narrowbody that was delivered from Chinese partner Shenyang Aircraft on Monday. Now located at Bombardier’s Ville Saint-Laurent, Quebec manufacturing plant, the test barrel represents the main fuselage section of the airplane.
The NTSB on Friday released a cockpit voice recorder transcript, group factual reports and other documents from the agency’s investigation of the Sept. 19, 2008, overrun crash of a Learjet 60 in Columbia, S.C. In that accident, the Learjet’s pilots attempted to abort the takeoff after a high-speed tire burst, according to the Safety Board.
