Sikorsky Aerospace Services last month announced the acquisition of LifePort and the simultaneous creation of an “accessories business segment.” The Woodland, Wash.-based aircraft accessories manufacturer specializes in air medical systems, lightweight armor, interior furnishings and galley equipment for both fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft. LifePort will retain its name and current executive management team, Sikorsky said.
Sikorsky Aerospace Services (SAS), an aftermarket division of Sikorsky Aircraft, has acquired Woodland, Wash.-based LifePort, a major accessories manufacturer specializing in air medical systems, interior furnishings and lightweight armor for fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. The acquisition further strengthens SAS’s accessories business segment.
The city of Bridgeport, Conn., received court approval to buy an acre
of land next to Sikorsky Memorial Airport and plans to build an engineered materials arresting system (Emas) safety area for Runway 6/24. According to NBAA, “The addition of an Emas runway safety area at BDR has been a source of conflict for nearly a decade because the airport is owned by Bridgeport but located in Stratford.”
The Canadian Air & Space Museum of Toronto has launched a fundraising drive to acquire a Sikorsky S-58T with almost half a century of service in the U.S. and Canada under its rotors. The museum has set an initial fundraising goal of $35,000 to acquire the helicopter and all associated spare parts and finance its transport to the museum.
Sikorsky Aircraft plans to invest $1 billion over the next 10 years in research and development to redefine the future of vertical flight, the Stratford, Conn.-based helicopter manufacturer announced earlier this month.
Shane Eddy is the new kid on the block at Sikorsky, but he’s no neophyte to helicopters, having spent more than 25 years in the industry, with the last 14 years at Bell Helicopter, where he most recently served as senior vice president of customer support and services.
Volo Aviation’s newest FBO at Sikorsky Memorial Airport in Bridgeport, Conn., is on target to open in April. The new facility includes 35,000 sq ft of hangar space and a 4,000-sq-ft FBO and office building featuring polycarbonate and structural glass panels instead of the traditional steel and concrete found at many airports. Volo’s FBO is the first major new construction project at the airport in about 30 years.
China’s Aviation Industry Corporation’s (Avic) Changhe subsidiary has completed its first Sikorsky S-76C++ airframe at its plant near Shanghai. It will now be shipped to Sikorsky’s Coatesville, Pa. facility for completion. Changhe will manufacture more S-76 airframes this year.
