While Midcoast Aviation was building yet another new hangar at its St. Louis Downtown Airport facility in Cahokia, Ill., a need for more hangar space spawned an elegant solution. Midcoast hired Mahaffey Fabric Structures to erect a portable hangar earlier this year so technicians could work on three Global 5000s, one Challenger 850 and nine Challenger 605s.

Staff members at Jeppesen’s International Trip Planning Services centers in the U.S. and UK are adding security to the list of capabilities FBOs should demonstrate to be listed as a preferred ground handler.

Defined as FBOs that are capable of “repeatedly delivering world-class handling services,” preferred ground handlers are now judged not only on their ability to offer unparalleled service but also on security practices.

Aeronautical chart provider Jeppesen is experiencing first hand some of the angst that can accompany a business’s transition to the brave new world of digital product and service marketing. In Jepp’s case problems arose from glitches with its FliteDeck electronic approach chart software, a recent version of which wreaked serious havoc by locking up users’ computers.

Jeppesen and Honeywell have announced an alliance whereby Jeppesen’s integrated navigation data service will be offered to buyers of Honeywell INAV (interactive navigation) avionics, under development for Gulfstream’s PlaneView and Dassault’s EASy cockpits.

Officials for Jeppesen report that the company has identified and corrected many of the irregularities in its NavData boundary data, but at press time about 350 of the more than 20,000 boundaries included in the latest update of the database, effective March 20, had not yet been fixed. The error arose from problems with a software upgrade when data was pulled from a database containing airspace boundaries worldwide for the March update.

Jeppesen named a successor to retiring president and CEO Horst Bergmann and added five business units to focus more clearly on customer market niches. Mark Van Tine was tapped to be president and COO, effective January 1. Bergmann will leave the company May 1. Van Tine is currently executive v-p. Bergmann’s retirement marks the end of more than 40 years of service with Jeppesen.
