The Elta subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (Booth P39) has added an electronic intelligence (Elint) capability to its ELM-2060 synthetic-aperture radar reconnaissance pod. The pod fits on the centerline of fighters from almost any origin, and has already been sold to a number of customers worldwide.

Just outside Phoenix, Arizona, Lockheed Martin’s Goodyear facility is a key provider of ISR capabilities. The facility was first developed by Goodyear Aerospace, a subsidiary of the tire company that had developed farms in the area to provide cotton for the belts in its tires. The company built Corsair fighters in World War II, and airships.
The developer of a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) that is orders of magnitude smaller than other radars was awarded a $24 million contract from the U.S. Army Contracting Command in Natick, Mass., to build a “lightweight, ultra-wideband” SAR for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for completion in 2017.
Developed originally by Ericsson Microwave Systems (now part of Saab Electronic Defence Systems’ business area), the Carabas foliage penetration (FOPEN) radar has been around for some time, but it has been improved significantly so it can see under the ground, and has been miniaturized so it can be carried by unmanned air vehicles (UAVs).
Schiebel Elektronische Geräte and Selex successfully flew the PicoSAR surveillance sensor June 30 aboard a Camcopter S-100 UAV, giving it an all-weather, long-range, ground-mapping and moving-target indication capability. The trial flight focused on the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) of the PicoSAR and enabled mapping of the area near the Schiebel production facility in Wiener Neustadt, Austria.
The advanced stand-off radar (ASTOR) ground surveillance system produced by Raytheon has passed a major operational test, and will be officially accepted by the UK Royal Air Force by September. Raytheon and British military officers lined up here yesterday to describe recent progress on a system that is, in fact, three years behind schedule.
Thales is targeting the huge potential for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for coastal surveillance in Southeast Asia by offering a compact, lightweight radar system called the Coastmaster. The UK group’s aerospace division developed the 66-pound system from the ground surveillance radar being fitted to the British Army’s Watchkeeper UAVs. (Helicopters and small manned aircraft could also carry the new radar.)
Total Aircraft Services (Booth No. 6151) of Van Nuys, Calif., has completed a radar pod for a Gulfstream III operated by NASA Dryden Flight Research Center. An Earth Science Capabilities Demonstration project, the unmanned air vehicle synthetic aperture radar (UAVSAR) is jointly supported by NASA-Dryden and NASA-Jet–Propulsion Laboratory.
With retirement for its aging RF-4 Phantoms looming, the Japan Air Self Defence Force has decided to equip a portion of its F-15J Eagle fighters with a reconnaissance capability. Yesterday Lockheed Martin announced that it would be part of a Japanese team to provide a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) capability to the Eagle. The company will provide SAR radars to be fitted into a pod carried under the aircraft’s belly.
Making its debut this week at the Farnborough International show, Raytheon’s Airborne Stand-off Radar (ASTOR) system will be delivered to the Royal Air Force (RAF) in stages over the next year. Comprising five modified Bombardier Global Express business jets and eight ground stations, ASTOR is a major new ground surveillance capability for the UK. Raytheon is now looking for additional customers.
