Aspen Avionics is extending its reach further into the general aviation market with a new VFR version of its primary flight display (PFD) glass panel retrofit product. Retailing for $4,995 (plus installation), the VFR 1000 PFD offers owners of older aircraft a way to add a single glass panel that replaces the traditional six-pack instruments, then later add additional capabilities, which are available as software upgrades. “This is tailored for the VFR pilot,” said John Uczekaj, Aspen president and CEO.

Vector Aerospace cockpit

Vector Aerospace Helicopter Services, North America, a subsidiary of Vector Aerospace (Booth No. 5906), has brought a custom-modified integrated cockpit for display at Heli-Expo 2014. The cockpit consists of two Sagem 10-inch multifunction displays (MFDs) and two Sagem 10-inch primary flight displays (PFDs) for right or left seat operations. It is part of Vector Aerospace’s Bell Huey UH-1H (civilian Bell 205A) upgrade program.

Elbit Systems is launching two new products here at Heli-Expo. The first, SkyVis, combines Elbit’s proven helmet-mounted display (HMD) with commercially certifiable line-of-sight and daytime head-up display capabilities, day or night, with or without night-vision goggles (NVG), in all phases of flight and in marginal weather.

Elbit also is unveiling Clearvision Heli EVS, a multi-spectral enhanced vision system designed for helicopters that provides improved situational awareness. Heli EVS builds on the company’s Clearvision EVS system designed for business jets.

Rockwell Collins HeliSure

The amount of Rockwell Collins avionics products in helicopters continues to grow and the company is a significant supplier for AgustaWestland, Airbus Helicopters, Aviacopter, HAL, Russian Helicopters and Sikorsky. To leverage its rotorcraft capabilities, Rockwell Collins developed the HeliSure family of products, designed to help improve pilots’ situational awareness, especially in “congested and hazard-filled airspace,” according to the company.

An integrated Universal Avionics flight deck will modernize the MD Helicopters MD 902 Explorer.

Helicopter manufacturers aren’t immune to the pressure to update their machines with modern avionics, and last year MD Helicopters and Universal Avionics Systems unveiled a new NextGen flight deck mockup for the MD 902 Explorer. The new avionics replace aging Bendix/King EFIS 40 cathode-ray-tube displays with high-resolution 10.4-inch Universal LCDs in landscape orientation.

Garmin announced an updated version of its Garmin Pilot iOS app that includes synthetic vision as an option for premium subscribers. Dubbed SVX, the new feature displays GPS-derived airspeed, altitude and vertical speed overlaid on a 3-D topographic landscape. When paired with Garmin’s GDL 39 3D Bluetooth ADS-B receiver, back-up aircraft attitude information can also be displayed on top of the synthetic display in Garmin Pilot. The Garmin Pilot app is free, but an annual subscription (starting at $74.99 per year) is required.

The customer is SpanAir, a leading air charter company that has operated the Bell 407 since 1996, and later added a Model 429. The company provides customized travel options and offers a modern, well-equipped fleet.

Rockwell Collins claims its new MultiScan ThreatTrack weather radar delivers far more information about atmospheric threats than existing systems.

Rockwell Collins is introducing its new MultiScan ThreatTrack weather radar at this year’s Singapore Airshow. The avionics group claims the radar provides air transport aircraft with “unprecedented” atmospheric threat-assessment capabilities.

Duncan Aviation finished its second Falcon 900B cockpit with Universal Avionics displays in December, installing Universal’s EFI-890R system in the cockpit and Honeywell’s Venue cabin management and entertainment system in the cabin. Duncan also installed a newly designed interior and exterior paint. The flight deck upgrade replaced 25 old instruments with five 8.9-inch Universal EFI-890R displays, which also show engine indications via Universal’s engine interface units.
