Sandel Avionics, Vista, Calif., has gained TSO and Part 27 supplemental type certificate (STC) approvals for its class-A HeliTAWS helicopter terrain avoidance and warning system, which includes a proprietary nuisance-alert elimination feature and high-resolution 3-D terrain display.
Online parts marketplace Rhobi (reinventing how online business integrates) “is the biggest technological advance for parts ordering and inventory since the fax machine,” asserts Steve Edwards, COO of Fort Smith, Ark.-based Rhobi. Edwards had a parts supply company and was unhappy with his options for software that would let his reps see up-to-date inventory, order parts and communicate with the company.
Banyan Air Service (Booth No. 629) recently completed an avionics installation on a Bombardier Challenger 604. The installation, which was done at the customer’s home base during a minimum maintenance inspection, included EMS Aviation’s high-speed data system, TW300 DirectTV and BluRay video with high-definition monitors. The tail section was modified and outfitted with a radome to encompass two parabolic antennas.
Aviation Communications & Surveillance Systems (ACSS) said its recently certified Change 7.1 software update for the company’s TCAS 2000 and TCAS II traffic alert and collision avoidance systems will be available in the fourth quarter of this year. Phoenix-based ACSS became the first TCAS maker to certify Change 7.1 software, developed to correct two potentially serious problems in the way TCAS warns pilots of traffic threats.
Borescopes R Us Sees Strong Start
Honeywell regularly brings its company-owned Eurocopter AS350 (N350FD) to Heli-Expo, and this year is no exception. “The helicopter is certified for experimental and market survey use,” explained Steve Kilbourne, senior test pilot. “We use it for development of Honeywell equipment and demonstrations to customers and potential customers.”
The trend toward “plug and play” replacement of legacy electromechanical instrumentation with electronic glass displays continues into the rotorcraft market with an STC won by Aspen Avionics authorizing installation of its EFD1000H flight display system in Bell 206 and 407 panels. A full-function simulator at the Aspen booth (No. 2304) demonstrates the system’s versatility, ease of installation and user-friendly pilot-machine interface.
Boeing announced today that it has established several new senior-level engineering leadership positions “to help drive engineering excellence and ensure program success across the company.” The appointees include vice president and chief project engineer for the 787 program Mike Delaney, who will now serve as head of airplane performance and product architecture for Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
Sandel Avionics of Vista, Calif., has begun pre-certification flight testing of a helicopter-specific terrain avoidance warning system based on its fixed-wing class-A TAWS. The system, HTAWS, will meet or exceed performance for any current class-B TAWS for helicopters, company founder and president Gerry Block told NBAA Convention News. Initial flight testing is taking place at San Diego’s Montgomery Field using a Eurocopter AS 350B2 AStar.
The Flight Dynamics division of Rockwell Collins next year plans to introduce a synthetic-vision system (SVS) with its Head-Up Guidance System (HGS, aka HUD) for Bombardier’s Global Express. The SVS HGS will be part of Rockwell’s Pro Line Fusion flight deck in the newest Global Express, and will overlay the normal HGS guidance symbology with a computer-generated, correctly oriented picture of the terrain ahead.
