Completion and modification specialist PATS Aircraft (Booth No. 2857) has announced a partnership with Tailwind Capital to offer executive/VIP conversions of the Bombardier CRJ-200 regional airliner. The conversions include an auxiliary fuel system to extend the range to 3,000 nm.
A Raytheon Premier I that ran off the runway on landing at North Las Vegas Airport (VGT) on May 27 might have gotten caught in a wind shift from a crosswind to a quartering tailwind moments before touching down. There were no injuries to the pilot or passenger, but the aircraft was substantially damaged, according to the NTSB’s preliminary report. The airplane touched down on 5,004-foot-long Runway 7 at 3:57 p.m.
Bell 206B3, Atlantic City, Wyo., Aug. 23, 2004–The Hawkins and Powers Aviation pilot was filming and had completed a “high groundspeed” pass when he encountered what he called wind shear and a “15- to 20-knot tailwind” while maneuvering close to the ground. The helicopter did not respond to control inputs and crashed, rolling over, crushing the forward fuselage and substantially damaging the helicopter.
Excessive speed might have been a factor in Tuesday morning’s fatal crash of a Cessna Citation 560 at McClellan-Palomar Airport in Carlsbad, Calif. The twinjet, registered to Goship Air in Ketchum, Idaho, was tracked by radar with about a 200-knot groundspeed at around 300 feet on final approach. The crew of Citation N86CE, on a flight from Hailey, Idaho, canceled IFR services shortly before the crash.
A new FAA policy will require Part 91, 121, 125 and 135 jet pilots never to land where available runway is not at least actual landing distance plus 15 percent. If conditions deteriorate en route, pilots will have to recalculate actual landing distance and the 15-percent safety margin. If the total is more than the available runway length, they will have to land elsewhere.
Hawker 700A, Teterboro, N.J., March 8, 2005–At about 10 p.m. EST, Hawker N703TS sustained minor damage while landing at Teterboro Airport (TEB). No one was injured. The pilot instructed the copilot to lower flaps 15 degrees during the approach, about 30 miles from the airport. He requested 25 degrees on a right downwind for Runway 1.
Beech King Air 200, Bay View, Texas, Dec. 10, 2004–The ATP pilot’s failure to maintain directional control as a result of his improper runway selection was blamed for the Charter One King Air’s crash into trees on takeoff from Rancho Buena Vista Airport. The right quartering 14-knot tailwind was a contributing factor. The runway was a 3,500-foot grass strip.
While the NTSB is far from concluding its investigation into the fatal nighttime overrun accident involving a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 at Chicago Midway Airport (MDW) on December 8, the Safety Board has released preliminary findings that shed light on what was going on in the cockpit and with the weather before the crash.
Rockwell Collins has announced its new Tailwind 300 satellite-direct television system, which it promotes as “ideal for the super-midsize and larger aircraft.” The system is listed at $200,000 for the hardware, uninstalled.
