Airbus has begun fabricating the first carbon fiber barrel for the A350 XWB fuselage at its Advanced Composites Center in Illescas, Spain, the company announced today. Airbus said it expects to finish the carbon fiber placement process used for producing the 18-foot-long fuselage barrel, known as section 19, “in the coming weeks.”
Engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney Canada and the Brazilian maintenance and engineering division of TAP Portugal announced an agreement to provide “comprehensive engine overhaul services for PT6A and PW100 turboprop operators in Latin America.” Engine services will be provided by TAP at its Porto Alegre facility, which offers the region’s only engine test cells.

Royal Air Maroc Picks Snecma for CFM56-7 Mx
Royal Air Maroc (RAM) has chosen Snecma to maintain the CFM56-7B engines that power its Boeing 737s. The by-the-hour contract covers 36 aircraft, 26 of which RAM already operates, and runs until December 2018. Snecma Morocco Engine Services, a Snecma-RAM joint venture in Casablanca, will supply the service.
Cooling down somewhat from a red-hot commercial start at this year’s Paris Air Show, Airbus yesterday won a pair of modest but significant firm orders–one from Filipino airline Zest Airways for its first new Airbus A320 and the other from French private airline Aigle Azur for a single A319.
Airbus, to date, has sold more than 100 single-aisle airplanes in executive configuration, including its first double-deck A380 “Flying Palace” and, in the first deal of its kind in the Middle East (and the largest ever for Airbus corporate jetliners) six VIP-configured A350XWB Prestige aircraft based on the A350-900, the newest member of the manufacturer’s corporate jetliner family.
Airbus has inked a contract with Honeywell to upgrade the wingtip navigation lights on the A320 family with light-emitting diode (LED) technology. Intended to last 40 times longer than standard halogen lighting, the LEDs will be added to the production line starting next March. Honeywell’s LED wingtip bulbs last about 20,000 hours each, compared with 500 hours for a halogen bulb.
Qatar Airways is planning to use its new Airbus Corporate Jetliner (ACJ) to replace a pair of Falcon 900s used by the government and ruling family. It will also be operated on European summer-season VIP scheduled service to destinations such as London; Geneva; and Nice, France; as well as for charter or wet-lease operations in the winter.
One of six Airbus-approved outfitters for its ACJ corporate jetliner family, Stork Fokker Services (Booth No. 875) is expanding its activities in the VIP/corporate completion market alongside competitors such as Jet Aviation, Lufthansa Technik and TAT’s Sabena Technics.
Despite the worldwide economic slump and the threat of war in Iraq, the fourth annual Aircraft Interiors Expo 2003 opened its doors at Germany’s Hamburg Messe conference center in late February, and organizers and exhibitors alike appeared pleasantly surprised at the industry response to this largest expo to date.
