Cessna 425, Menominee, Mich., Dec. 5, 2006–The pilot of the Conquest I told the NTSB that he landed and taxied onto the airport terminal ramp at Menominee normally. He brought the props into the Beta (reverse) range while taxiing to control speed. After he stopped on the ramp, he put the propellers back into Beta and backed the airplane about four to six feet to align with a parked airplane.
NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol, one of three who survived the Nov. 28, 2004, crash of a chartered Challenger 600 at Montrose, Colo., said he saw “chunks of slush” sliding off the cabin roof and across his window while the twinjet was taxiing for takeoff, according to the recently released NTSB factual report. The Air Castle-operated aircraft crashed on takeoff, killing Ebersol’s son, the pilot and the flight attendant.
The NTSB concluded that the October 22 incident involving a corporate Boeing 727 injuring a person on the ground was caused by the captain’s “improper decision to maneuver a transport category airplane in a confined and unapproved area with engine thrust.” While taxiing for takeoff at San Antonio International Airport, the 727 proceeded beyond the last entrance to Runway 12R and into a confined ramp area, which is closed to aircraft weighing
Raytheon Beech King Air 200, Hondo, Texas, Sept. 5, 2006–The King Air had just been painted when the 18,500-hour ATP-rated pilot arrived to fly it back to home base. The airport at which it had been painted did not have jet-A, so he planned to fly to an airport 30 miles away to refuel. While taxiing out, he ran into a pothole, which was not visible because of standing rainwater. There was no notam warning about the damaged taxiway.
NASA’s Langley Research Center in Virginia is addressing runway and taxiway incursion threats by testing a variety of new technologies, one of the most interesting of which is a miniature head-up display that the pilot wears on his head and positions in front of the eye.
The FAA is investigating a November 29 incident in which an Embraer Legacy operated by fractional provider Flight Options hit a parked company Legacy while trying to taxi around it at the company’s home base, Cleveland-Hopkins Airport. There were no injuries, but both business jets incurred “substantial damage” when the right wing of the taxiing Legacy hit the tailcone of the parked Legacy, according to the FAA.
Gulfstream GIV, Newark, N.J., March 16, 2005–The NTSB blamed the ground collision of a Boeing Business Jet (BBJ) and a Gulfstream GIV on the Boeing flightcrew’s misjudged clearance of the parked Gulfstream during taxiing.
