Nivisys Industries received the first FAA TSO-C164 approval for its NVAG-6 night-vision aviator goggle. According to Nivisys, it is the first night-vision goggle (NVG) manufacturer to apply for and also first to receive FAA technical standard order (TSO) approval. “Nivisys decided two years ago that aviation safety hinged on FAA-approved NVGs,” said Gary Higman, manager of law enforcement and homeland security programs for Nivisys.

Mid-Continent Instruments (Booth No. 2656) is showing the AX1 attitude heading and reference system manufactured by Axitude, an avionics design and manufacturing company based in Naples, Italy. As the exclusive U.S. distributor, Mid-Continent said the AX1 allows aircraft owners to select the primary flight display that meets their individual preferences or requirements, while the unit provides critical attitude and navigational output.

Sandel Avionics received FAA technical standard order (TSO) certification of its new vibration-resistant SG102 attitude- and heading-reference system (AHRS) for helicopter applications. The SG102 is certified for primary heading reference and offers helicopter operators a solid-state replacement for electromechanical directional gyros. When packaged with Sandel’s SN3500 or SN4500 displays, it offers a complete compass system upgrade.

The FAA has approved eight valve-regulated sealed lead acid batteries
under Technical Standard Order C173 for Concorde Battery.

The TSO-approved models are Concorde’s RG-121 Series and RG-122 Series, emergency batteries for lighting, standby, avionics, fadec and backup power. Parts conforming to TSO C173 are approved for design and production.

Technical standard orders for terrain awareness and warning systems (TAWS) have been revised as TSO C151b, which includes a new class-C category intended for voluntary installations on smaller aircraft not covered by the requirements for class-A and -B TAWS. In March 2005 class-A and -B TAWS are required in turbine aircraft with six or more passenger seats, with class-A systems intended for larger Part 91 airplanes and commercial aircraft.

The FAA is proposing a technical standard order (TSO) for night vision goggles. If adopted, TSO C-164 would set the minimum performance levels for such devices. Night vision goggles are growing in popularity among some operators as a means of enhancing the view outside aircraft in night VMC, improving situational awareness. The FAA notes that this equipment is portable, battery operated and is independent of aircraft systems.
