Avinode and Charter X have completed the merger that they agreed to in March and are pressing ahead with plans to form what will be the executive charter market’s largest online portal. Avinode has bought out the Charter X shares for an undisclosed sum. The two companies’ technical teams have started work to integrate the rival systems.

MD Helicopters MD902, Salinas, Calif., July 21, 2008–The NTSB has determined that the pilot’s inability to maintain directional control of the helicopter stemmed from the fatigue failure of the threaded portion of the forward directional-control cable, resulting from an improperly installed lock washer.

Online charter portal Avinode upgraded its new aircraft charter search engine, making it easier for charter brokers and operators to put together the most cost-efficient routes by allowing them to search more effectively for real-time aircraft availability and pricing. It can also show complex sets of charter flight options, even for operators with multiple bases or a floating fleet.

And here this week enjoy every second of it, for it could well be the last time you have the chance to witness the spectacle. Honeywell yesterday received TSO approval for SmartRunway and SmartLanding, which are both software upgrades for the company’s Mark V and Mark VII enhanced ground proximity warning systems (EGPWS) that can help reduce runway excursions and incursions. The systems require just one hour of aircraft downtime for installation and minimal pilot training, Honeywell said.

Business aircraft activity showed “tentative signs of recovery” last month, according to data from aviation services company Aviation Research Group/U.S. (ARG/US). “Shortly after the beginning of the global downturn, business aircraft activity has been hit by a slump in demand, but in recent weeks the trend suggests activity could meet 2008 levels in the near term,” the firm said.

Business aircraft flight activity continued a near straight line trend last month, according to TRAQPak data from specialized aviation services company Aviation Research Group/U.S. (ARG/US). Flight activity last month closely followed May’s levels, though with a slight decline of 1.45 percent. Business aircraft flight activity last month dropped 16.8 percent year-over-year, with large-cabin aircraft leading the losses at -31.7 percent.
