The FAA plans to start introducing instrument approaches using its Wide Area Augmentation System on July 10, bringing much higher levels of accuracy, signal availability and approach performance to GPS-based satnav. WAAS avionics now entering the market herald the end of today’s “dive and drive” nonprecision approaches, replacing them with two new procedures.
A proposed airworthiness directive for the Sikorsky S-76 would require inspections of the tail rotor vertical stabilizer aft spar assembly every 50 hours after an assembly has 1,000 hours time-in-service. It would also require track and balance of the tail rotor within 30 days and every 200 hours thereafter. The AD would affect an estimated 216 S-76A/B/Cs on the U.S. registry.
Flight Options’ paperless cockpits are so well-liked by its pilots that those who end up with airplanes not yet equipped with electronic flight bags (EFBs) feel slighted.
James Miller, v-p of Flight Options, said here yesterday that the two “hot things for us this year” are installing EFBs in the remainder of the fractional giant’s 200-plus fleet of airplanes and putting AirCell satcom phones in all of its aircraft.
Garrett Aviation has completed its first installation of Honeywell’s integrated display system–known as the Primus Epic control display system/retrofit (CDS/R)–in a Gulfstream III for an undisclosed owner. FAA supplemental type certification is expected by early November, pending Honeywell’s achieving TSO approval, expected later this month.

MD 369D, Columbus, Mont., May 28, 2007– The commercial pilot and one crewmember were seriously injured and a second crew-member was killed when the Dylan Aviation MD 369 crashed during an attempted forced landing, after the helicopter had lost power.

Virtually all cargo aircraft will be required to have TCAS installed by Oct. 31, 2003, under a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) issued last week. Turbine airplanes of more than 33,000 lb mtow operated under Part 121, 125 or 129 would be required to be equipped with TCAS II. Turbine airplanes with mtows of up to 33,000 lb operated under Part 121, 125 or 129 would be required to be equipped with at least TCAS I.

Jeppesen announced it has been selected to provide worldwide weather information and forecasts for use by subscribers of the Merlin airborne weather system in development by Dulles, Va.-based Satellink Technologies. Scheduled for availability this spring, Merlin will provide real-time weather to aircraft in flight, including high-resolution color weather charts and Notams supplied by Jeppesen.
