Most corporate pilots know how TCAS operates and what it does, but fewer are familiar with ADS-B. ADS-B works via small onboard transmitter/receivers, which send out brief signal bursts that include the airplane’s identification, GPS position, altitude and current flight profile once per second. These bursts are picked up by all ADS-B-equipped aircraft within line-of-sight range.

The Greek Falcon 900 in which seven people were killed during a series of violent oscillations on Sept. 14, 1999, is destined to be delivered in an airworthy condition to an unidentified Middle East customer for executive transportation, according to Jean-Pierre Sauval, general manager of Transairco, the Geneva-based service center that is said to be repairing the trijet.

Honeywell has started demonstrating an optional software upgrade to its enhanced ground proximity warning system (EGPWS) that is intended to curb runway incursions and improve airport safety. Called the runway awareness and advisory system (RAAS), the software-only modification uses the EGPWS unit’s internal database of runways and GPS-derived position to increase pilot situational awareness during taxi, takeoff and landing.

Raytheon Aircraft announced a lightweight interior modification for its Premier I that the company says reduces cabin average noise level to 82.2 dBA on takeoff and 73.6 dBA during long-range cruise.

Duncan Aviation has been awarded a “multiple aircraft type” STC for Honeywell’s runway awareness and advisory system (RAAS), allowing the company to install it on aircraft equipped with Honeywell’s Mark V or Mark VII EGPWS systems. This STC includes the option for an “inhibit” annunciator switch that allows flight crews to mute RAAS warnings for 30, 60 or 90 seconds.
