The FAA extended until October 6 the comment period for its proposal to clarify the agency’s policy that hangars are to be used only for storage or maintenance of aircraft. Compliance inspections have found that some hangars are “routinely used” to store vehicles and large household items. “In some cases, this storage interferes with, or entirely displaces, aeronautical use of the hangar,” the FAA said.
A Falcon 7X and three other corporate aircraft have moved into anew 40,000-sq-ft hangar bay at Duncan Aviation’s facility in Lincoln, Neb.
“The hangar opened a few weeks ahead of schedule,” said airframe services manager Chad Doerhing. “We worked to complete it sooner because of the sheer volume of aircraft we have moving through our facility right now.”
Atlantic Aviation negotiated a deal to purchase Hangar Ten Aviation Services, one of two turbine aircraft service providers at Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport (MKC) in Kansas City. The three-year-old facility stands on 10 acres and features a 26,000-sq-ft terminal with a crew lounge and fitness center among its amenities. The FBO also features a 29,000-sq-ft hangar and an in-house catering kitchen. “Hangar Ten realized that to provide even better service to our customers around the country, we needed to be a part of a something bigger,” said company chairman and CEO Jim Stowers.
A new online marketplace is aiming to become the source for all things aviation real estate. Hangar Network, which made its official debut earlier this year, is positioning itself to become the go-to source for available hangar space and developable airport real estate. “We really set out to create a website and service that is comprehensive for aviation real estate listings,” said Iver Retrum, manager of the Colorado-based company.
To prevent damage to aircraft as they are moved in hangars, charter and aircraft management provider Talon Air, based at Republic Airport on New York’s Long Island, has installed in two of its hangars a new Optex Redscan laser-scan perimeter-detection system that will warn pilots and hangar personnel when part of an aircraft comes within eight feet of the walls.
Summit Aviation of Middletown, Del., recently dedicated a new 78,000-sq-ft expansion that includes a 37,400-sq-ft hangar, 9,200-sq-ft paint facility, two cold storage units and an additional 11,400 sq ft of support and office space. It joins an existing 160,000-sq-ft facility located on the MRO’s 550-acre compound. The new hangar is designed to work on the CH-47 and V-22.
A nearly 20,000-sq-ft hangar is available at the Paradise Aviation Center located at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. Large enough to accommodate a BBJ or a pair of Gulfstream IVs along with a Falcon 50, the structure also includes another approximately 5,800 sq ft of office, lounge, restroom and dining space as well as a climate-controlled 12-car garage.
As part of its $4.5 million development project at Fort Worth Meacham International Airport (FTW), Texas Jet is nearing completion of a 30,000-sq-ft hangar it has leased to Trimec Aviation. “With our growing Astra/G100 customer base, we have outgrown the facility we’ve been in for 25 years,” said Trimec president John Dunn. “The new hangar will also provide us with the option to move into Galaxy/G200 maintenance.
Maintenance provider Swift Aviation Services, located at Norwood Memorial Airport (Mass.), suffered a roof cave-in of one of its hangars on February 2, evidently the result of the weight of accumulated snow exacerbated by freezing rain. The hangar appeared to be totaled and some of the six light airplanes and a helicopter that were inside when the roof collapsed were destroyed, according to observers on the scene.
There are angels to meet you here at the Heaven’s Landing NBAA booth (No. 7914), but lovely as they may be, they are of the earthly variety. The actual Heaven’s Landing is an exclusive estate airpark like nothing else on earth, the developers claim.
