ViaSat’s Exede Internet consumer broadband service is expanding to the airline sector, and sources at the Carlsbad, Calif.-based company say it is considering providing Exede to business aviation, though no plans have been announced yet.

At AIX, ViaSat announced it had set Guinness world records for the highest-capacity satellite, allowing 100 times the capacity of a typical Ku-band satellite and 10 times the throughput of any Ka-band satellite launched before ViaSat-1.

French electronics provider PGA Electronics is introducing its new Smart Touch Cabin, a wireless software application that allows passengers to control cabin functions from any point in the cabin using Apple mobile devices such as the iPad and iPhone. The customized interface, according to the company, allows control of most aspects of the cabin, from lighting and entertainment to electric shades.

Phenom 300 production

Embraer started Phenom 300 production at its Melbourne, Fla. facility this week, the Brazilian manufacturer announced today. Phenom 100s have been assembled at the Florida plant since early last year, with 14 of the U.S.-built light jets delivered to U.S., Canadian and Mexican customers to date.

Rosen Aviation is “refreshing” its entire display product line to high-definition, from seven-inch seat monitors to 42-inch bulkhead-mounted variants.

According to Jeff Unger, v-p of engineering and business development, the entire line of display screens will be full high-definition by year-end.

Unger said the Eugene, Ore.-based firm is also keeping a close eye on 3-D technology, including systems that do not require special glasses.

Rosen’s entire line will be on exhibit at this year’s NBAA Convention, to be held from October 30 to November 1 in Orlando.

Launch of the ViaSat-1 high-capacity, Ka-band, spot-beam satellite has been set for Wednesday, October 19 at 18:48 GMT from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan aboard a Russian Proton M launch vehicle. The satellite will enable the broadband multimedia Internet access that ViaSat, of Carlsbad, Calif., expects to provide over the next decade to meet an accelerating growth in airborne bandwidth demand.

German executive charter firm Triple Alpha Luftfahrt filed for insolvency on Friday and is now under the control of a court-appointed administrator. The Düsseldorf-based operator is a subsidiary of Ocean Sky Group Holdings, but according to chief executive Steve Grimes, the UK-based business aviation services company is trading normally and is unaffected by the bankruptcy.

UK-based private aviation services provider Ocean Sky (Booth No. E312) has signaled its expansion into the Middle East with the opening of an office in Dubai. According to the company, while its initial focus in the region will be to offer air charter and aircraft management services, it expects eventually to expand into other segments such as aircraft acquisition and sales and FBO operations.
