Researchers at the University of West Florida’s Institute for Human and Machine Cognition in Pensacola are developing a symbol-based, flight-deck display that is capable of providing an instantaneous presentation of an aircraft’s flight situation to the pilot. Named Oz, the surprisingly intuitive concept is seen as applicable to all fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, large and small, civil and military.
HAWKER SIDDELEY HS-125-700A, BEAUMONT, TEXAS, SEPT. 20, 2003–While the crew was practicing stalls, Hawker N45BP, operated by Starflite, of Houston, was destroyed when it went down 15 miles northwest of the Beaumont airport. All three pilots on board were all killed.
The Sino Swearingen SJ30-2 that crashed in a remote area of Texas on the morning of April 26 was on the second in a series of flights to complete flutter certification before it suddenly rolled and went into an uncontrolled descent into the ground. Company test pilot Carroll Beeler, 59, was killed in the accident. No one else was aboard.

BEECH 1900D, HYANNIS, MASS., AUG. 26, 2003–At approximately 7:38 p.m. EDT Beech N240CJ, operated by Colgan Air, crashed after takeoff from Runway 24 at Barnstable Municipal Airport (HYA) in Hyannis. Both pilots–captain Scott Knabe, 39, and first officer Steven Dean, 38–the only occupants, were killed and the aircraft was destroyed.
In the fall, CAE SimuFlite is scheduled to have its first Citation X simulator ready for initial and recurrent pilot and mechanic training. The FAA level-D simulator, installed at SimuFlite’s Dallas facility, is equipped with a Honeywell SPZ-7600 digital autoflight control system, Universal UNS-1D flight management system with GPS, Enhanced GPWS, TCAS II and moving-map display.
AIN this week participated in a demonstration of new technology aimed at preventing runway incursions, where Honeywell’s airborne TCAS units were linked with Sensis’ ASDE-X airport surface detection radar and its associated multilateration safety logic system. The prototype system was demonstrated in two simulated incursions at the Syracuse, N.Y. airport on Tuesday.

An EC 130 operated by New York City’s Liberty Helicopters made a forced landing into the Hudson River last month during an otherwise routine sightseeing flight. According to the NTSB’s preliminary report, the pilot, who was flying at between 300 and 400 feet, reported hearing a loud bang, saw debris fly by her windshield and then lost all yaw control.
