The Citation 500 series, Challenger 600 and Falcon 2000 are the latest recipients of Duncan STCs for various avionics installations. The Lincoln, Neb.-based company recently received an STC for installation of the Honeywell GNS-XL FMS in a Citation 560. This STC, which applies to the entire Citation 500 series, was completed in conjunction with a TAWS STC.
Terrain awareness and warning system
Sandel Avionics of Vista, Calif., is telling customers that the certification program for its terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS) is encountering delays. There are no major problems with the system, but development and incorporation of some additional features are proceeding more slowly than originally anticipated, according to a company official. List price of the system is $34,500.
Aviation Communications & Surveillance Systems (ACSS), a joint-venture company owned by L-3 Communications and Thales Avionics, plans to certify a combined traffic alert and collision avoidance system (TCAS) and terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS) in a single box called T2CAS.
Recognizing that some aircraft operators will want to equip with terrain awareness and warning systems (TAWS) even though they are not required to do so, the FAA is proposing the addition of a third class for TAWS, possibly to be known as class C. Class-A and -B TAWS are required in turbine aircraft with six or more passenger seats, with the higher-level class-A TAWS intended for larger Part 91 airplanes and commercial aircraft.
Installation centers anticipating extra demand nearer the start of the March 29, 2005, mandate for terrain awareness and warning systems (TAWS) in the existing turbine fleet are advising operators to purchase and install the equipment sooner rather than holding off until shop schedules start filling up.
Gulfstream Aerospace received an STC for the installation of the Northstar Technologies Flight Deck Organizer in the GIV and GIV-SP. The system combines a complete Jeppesen approach chart database with a moving-map display. System cost, including installation, is about $50,000, not including the chart subscription. The Savannah, Ga. manufacturer is working to obtain an STC for the system on the GII, GIII and GV.
Duncan Aviation, the Lincoln, Neb. company that specializes in avionics STCs and installations, has prepared a free booklet titled Straight Talk About RVSM (reduced vertical separation minimums). The booklet describes how RVSM implementation affects corporate operators and includes an explanation of regulatory requirements, a list of scheduled implementation dates and answers to a series of frequently asked questions.
In a down economy it usually makes sense to focus on the finer details of running a business. Instead of pipe wrenches, avionics installers are using Allen keys to strengthen and fine tune their strategies, relying, for example, on new and pending FAA regulations for RVSM, TAWS and ELTs to help propel them through the slowdown.
