Aviation Communications and Surveillance Systems (ACSS) inked an agreement with Airbus to certify the Phoenix avionics maker’s T3CAS product in all Airbus single-aisle (A318/319/320/321) and long-range (A330/A340) airplanes. T3CAS is an integrated system that combines traffic alert and collision avoidance system (TCAS) with terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS) capability and a mode-S transponder in a single line-replaceable unit.

The crash of a Mercy Flight King Air 200 on Feb. 6, 2007, near Bozeman, Mont., is believed to be the first CFIT (controlled flight into terrain) loss of a civil turbine-powered airplane equipped with an enhanced ground proximity warning system (EGPWS).

In a historic first the FAA has issued a TSO for the synthetic-vision EFIS developed by Chelton Flight Systems of Boise, Idaho. Intended primarily for the high-performance piston and turboprop markets, the system is unique in aviation because of its ability to portray 3-D views of terrain and obstacles and so-called highway-in-the-sky (HITS) guidance cues on a full-color primary flight display.

Flight crews are the primary cause in two out of three accidents in the 41 states of the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC), according to Mike Ambrose, director general of the European Regions Airline Association (ERA). Ambrose was speaking at the March 18 to 19 European Aviation Safety Seminar jointly presented in Geneva, by the Flight Safety Foundation (FSF) and ERA.

In that time, the CFIT (controlled flight into terrain) accident rate among aircraft that carry EGPWS has dropped to zero.

Two days of test flying are all that remain before the FAA can put its stamp of approval on T2CAS, the combined TCAS and TAWS product from Phoenix-based ACSS. Pilots from the FAA’s Long Beach, Calif. certification office plan to evaluate the system for the final time in ACSS’ King Air C90 test aircraft later this month.

Honeywell and ACSS have agreed to let a private arbitrator resolve their ongoing legal dispute over EGPWS patents. As a result, Honeywell has dismissed its lawsuit against ACSS (filed last August in U.S. District Court in Delaware) which had accused the smaller company of infringing patents first applied in the enhanced version of Honeywell’s GPWS.
