The first Bell 525 Relentless super-medium twin helicopter is moving closer to final assembly at Bell Helicopter’s plant in Amarillo, Texas. Matt Hasik, Bell’s senior vice president of commercial programs, told AIN that the three main cabin sections will be joined within the next few weeks. He also said that the first carbon-fiber, all-composite main rotor blade for the 525 has been completed and is undergoing testing.
Flight-test operations have begun at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) test site, which last week became the fourth operational site of six authorized in the U.S. by the FAA. The agency granted the university a two-year certificate of authorization (COA) to fly the 85-pound American Aerospace Advisors’ Recon System-16, based on the Arcturus T-16XL fixed-wing aircraft.
While Houston Hobby Airport hosts thousands of business aviation flights each year, I wonder how many of the crews transiting the airport are aware of the old Municipal Airport Terminal? It’s something that I didn’t know still existed until a trip to Houston earlier this year, for the opening of the new Million Air FBO/company headquarters. Driving on Telephone Road on the west side of the airport, I noticed the white art-deco wedding cake-shaped building set back from the street, along with a few signs advertising it as the 1940 Air Terminal Museum.

Dallas Airmotive has identified a site at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport as the location for its proposed 30,000-sq-ft advanced test facility. Slated for groundbreaking in late July, the facility is awaiting approval by the DFW Airport board of directors. It will have three turboshaft and three turbofan test cells, a centralized control room, and a 15,000-sq-ft pre- and post-test preparation area. The facility is expected to be completed and operational by the first half of next year.

Wilson Air Center has begun the second phase of expanding its FBO at Houston Hobby Airport. Phase one consisted of a total renovation of its existing facility, including pilots’ lounges and snooze rooms, a presidential suite and more than 80,000 sq ft of hangar space. The next installment will include the construction of a 25,000-sq-ft hangar, capable of accommodating the G650, along with a new office complex. The project is scheduled for completion in the spring.
The city of McKinney, Texas, has completed changing the name of its airport to McKinney National Airport from Collin County Regional Airport. The rebranding accompanies the city’s $25 million purchase of the lone FBO on the field, formerly operated by Cutter Aviation, from Schuler Development, along with several more hangars and improvements. The Dallas suburb planned the changes as a cornerstone for economic development of the airport as well as a means to erase the annual $600,000 subsidy the city has provided it.
