The FAA granted a request from four trade associations to delay the compliance date of new repair station rules. The agency published the rules on Aug. 6, 2001, with an initial effective date of April 6, 2003.

Aircraft Belts of Kemah, Texas, long a provider of aircraft occupant restraint systems, is branching into the corporate aircraft decorative plating business with the opening of subsidiary Signature Plating. The new company will occupy a 12,500-sq-ft facility in Cibolo, Texas, near San Antonio.

Houston Executive Airport has leased all available new T-hangars, some even before they have been built. The new Houston airport opened last January to offer a new alternative for general aviation operators in the Houston area. Built west of downtown Houston by former commercial pilot and Houston native Ron Henriksen, the new airport features a 5,050-foot runway that will eventually be extended to 7,604 feet.

After Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.) announced November 26 that he would leave the Senate at the end 2007, it didn’t take long to fill his post as the ranking Republican member of the Senate aviation subcommittee. With- in days, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (Texas) was named to replace him.

The Dallas Executive Airport (RBD) has been selected as the 2004 Reliever Airport of the Year by the Texas Department of Transportation. The award was presented at the 22nd annual Texas aviation conference held recently in the state capital, Austin. Dallas Executive, formerly known as Redbird, is a 1,000-acre facility about 10 miles (18 minutes’ drive time, according to MapQuest) south of downtown Dallas.

FirstAir, an FBO with two existing locations, is adding its third branch at Addison Airport serving Dallas. The company acquired an existing 24,000-sq-ft hangar that is being renovated and should open later this month. Envisioned as a full-service FBO, FirstAir at Addison will provide fueling and other line services.

Dallas Airmotive’s late-September announcement that it would be closing its Millville, N.J. facility caused something of a stir. Much of the concern focuses on the loss of more than 240 jobs, but some concern stems from the company’s long history.

SIKORSKY S-76A++, GALVESTON, TEXAS, MARCH 23, 2004–The NTSB has concluded its on-scene investigation of the accident that sent S-76A++ N579EH into the Gulf of Mexico, killing all 10 on board. Ninety percent of the helicopter had been recovered at press time.

NBAA welcomed the announcement yesterday that Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) will serve as the new ranking member of the Senate aviation subcommittee, replacing Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.), who last week announced plans to retire by year-end. The subcommittee has jurisdiction over a wide range of aviation issues including the FAA reauthorization legislation currently circulating through Congress.
