Central Texas, near the capital city of Austin, may yet get the general aviation airport it has so desperately needed for the past several years. When Austin (Texas) Mueller Airport gave way to the new Austin Bergstrom International Airport in April 1999, general aviation was not granted nearly the same footprint it had enjoyed at the old, now-closed field.

West Bend, Wis.-based EMS-Link, with help from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, and other partners, plans to introduce a program for remote monitoring of the vital signs of passengers or crew of corporate aircraft. According to CEO Paul Egan, EMS-Link allows real-time transmission of a patient’s vital signs over any standard narrow-band telephone connection.

Privately owned and operated Houston Executive Airport, west of Houston, has completed a runway extension to 6,610 feet. “Our ability to support larger aircraft will be a real advantage to the aviation business community,” said Andrew Perry, the airport’s executive director. The new airport opened in January 2007 and recently completed a 26,000-sq-ft corporate hangar.

A developer may convert portions of the former Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock, Texas, into a full-service general aviation airport. According to Eric Williams, executive director of the Lubbock Reese Redevelopment Authority, Riata Development signed an agreement in late June to lease 1,700 acres for the airport and is now in due diligence. The base, totaling 2,500 acres, has been under development as a research technology park.

Aiming to attract business travelers who are working for companies in the $5 million to $90 million sales-per-year range, Mooney Airplane, now a subsidiary of Mooney Aerospace Group (MAG) of Long Beach, Calif., has reduced the price of its piston singles by an average of $90,000, or about 20 percent. The first new production airplane will be delivered at Oshkosh later this month, according to MAG Chairman and CEO Roy Norris.

Pilots seeking an alternative to busy and expensive Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas might want to try Bird’s Nest Airport, 12 miles northeast of downtown Austin, which was purchased last October by Ron Henriksen, owner of the privately developed Houston Executive Airport. Since buying Bird’s Nest, Henriksen has repaved the 2,750-foot runway and made other improvements.

Houston-based REW Investments has acquired Million Air Interlink, the franchise company that controls 21 privately owned Million Air FBOs. REW president is Roger Woolsey, who owns the Million Air franchise at Houston Hobby Airport.
