The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive for the Bombardier CL-600-1A11. It requires revising the airplane flight manual to prohibit thrust reverser operation. The AD also calls for repetitive detailed inspections of both engine thrust reversers for cracks and modifying them if necessary. Modifying the thrust reversers is also an optional terminating action for the repetitive inspections.
A new airworthiness directive (AD) for the Learjet 45 stems from a report of two cases of premature corrosion on the structural support flange for the engine thrust reverser. The AD requires inspecting for any corrosion, and damage to the sealant; installing sealants and gaskets; and related investigative and corrective action as necessary.
The Engine Alliance, a 50-50 joint venture of GE and Pratt & Whitney, has received EASA approval for two new thrust ratings for the GP7200 turbofan engine, one of the two engines available to power the Airbus A380. The new ratings bring the GP7200 to four thrust rating configurations.
GE Aviation is preparing to begin flight tests of its new Leap-1C and Passport engines featuring nacelles developed for them by the group’s Nexcelle joint venture with Safran subsidiary Aircelle. Last month, Nexcelle delivered the first full new-generation nacelles for both programs. They are due to fly soon on the engine maker’s Boeing 787 testbed. The Leap-1C is to power Comac’s C919 narrowbody airliner, while the Passport has been selected for Bombardier’s Global 7000 and 8000 business jets.
The Flaris LAR 1, the five-seat single-engine very light jet unveiled by Podgórzyn, Poland-based Flaris last June at the Paris Air Show, has recently started low-speed taxi tests, but its maiden flight has slipped again.
Pilatus Business Aircraft is displaying a mock-up of its twinjet PC-24, announced earlier this year at EBACE, here at its NBAA booth (No. C12216) near the indoor static display. A prototype is currently under construction and is expected to fly late next year and certification and first customer deliveries are anticipated in 2017. Three aircraft will be used in the flight test program.
GE Aviation started testing its new fourth-generation composite fan blades for the new GE9X turbofan, the company announced last week. Chosen to power the new Boeing 777X, the 100,000-pound-thrust-class engine promises a 10-percent fuel burn improvement over the GE90-115B–the engine that powers the Boeing 777-300ER.
Accompanied by plumes of dry ice pouring from the edges of a black-curtained mockup and the music from the Superman movie, chairman Oscar Schwenk called for the unveiling of Pilatus Aircraft’s long-awaited new twinjet project, the PC-24.
To mark Learjet’s 50th anniversary, artist Princess Tarinan von Anhalt is using the engine thrust from a Bombardier Flexjet Learjet 40XR, in lieu of a paintbrush, to create new masterpieces today and tomorrow at Signature Flight Support in West Palm Beach, Fla. To create her latest artwork, von Anhalt is hurling paint into the engine exhaust–a force of approximately 3.5 tons–while standing 50 feet between the aircraft and the canvas.
S.S. White Technologies (Hall 4 Stand A4) has been selected to provide flexible rotary shafts for the Pratt & Whitney PW1000G engine’s nacelle. The shafts will transfer power on the variable area fan nozzle (VAFN) and synchronize actuators on the thrust reversers. The U.S. company has already provided two flexible rotary shafts for the thrust reverser rig, and previously supplied two flexible shafts for the VAFN test setup.
