Russia’s Aviation Register of the Interstate Aviation Committee has cleared Helivert, the joint venture between Russian Helicopters and AgustaWestland, to begin assembling AW139s at a new plant at Tomilino.
An order for as many as 35 AgustaWestland AW139 medium helicopters, which might be produced by the Helivert joint factory with Russian Helicopters, hit a snag in late August. Negotiations between the Russian Defense Ministry and AgustaWestland spilled into the press, with deputy defense minister Yuri Borisov telling the country’s news agency Itar-Tass, “It’s a very expensive machine. If they cut the price, then we can return to the issue,” giving the distinct impression that a decision had already been made to pass on the $671 million order.
AgustaWestland (Booth 7070) has received orders from Russia and the British Isles for VIP-configured helicopters.
Exclases Russia inked a contract for five AW139 medium twins–in a mix of VIP and utility layouts. HeliVert, a Russian Helicopters and AgustaWestland joint venture located in Tomilino near Moscow, will produce the AW139s. The deal is a follow-on to a previous agreement, which calls for one AW139 to be delivered in June. Exclases also has ordered a GrandNew light twin in VIP transport configuration.
The first AgustaWestland AW139 helicopter assembled in Russia flew last month, Helivert, a joint venture between AgustaWestland and Russian Helicopters, announced Tuesday. The 37-minute maiden sortie took place on December 19 at Russian Helicopters’ “National Helicopter Building Center” in Tomilino, near Moscow.
Russian Helicopters and CAE are studying the joint development of helicopter flight simulators and pilot training programs in Tomilino, near Moscow. They will also discuss the joint creation of training centers in Russia and other countries. Russian Helicopters may thus “gain access to CAE’s technologies,” while CAE in turn will “have the opportunity to promote its products for Russian-built helicopters.”

AgustaWestland broke ground on a new production plant at Tomilino, near Moscow, late last month. The 120,000-sq-ft building will house another final assembly line for the AW139 medium twin under an equal joint venture called HeliVert with state-owned Russian Helicopters. The AW139 is currently manufactured in Italy, as well as in the U.S. at Agusta’s Philadelphia plant.
